So now we have the details. The first stage performed correctly and would have landed perfectly except it had built up too much rotational spin on re-entry. There was probably not enough time for them to make a correction for this and it would have been averted if the craft had landing legs. The second stage didn't relight though it was attempted. The computer shut it down due to conditions and "SpaceX has actually relit the Merlin engine in ground testing a dozen times in some cases and SpaceX is confident it can make the necessary adjustments before the next flight." The results are that: SpaceX recovered portions of the stage and now, along with the Grasshopper tests, we believe we have all the pieces to achieve a full recovery of the boost stage. Very exciting!
First Stage just before it hit the ocean. More info here: http://www.parabolicarc.com/2013/10/16/spacex-releases-images-falcon-stage-descent/
This is very impressive. Once they have full re-usability they'll be the cheapest launch company in the world. I hope they're ready for the major ramp up they're going to see.
I had seen that image before, but I didn't realize it was over the ocean. Pretty awesome. I'd love to see footage from onboard cameras.
