Upgrading AWD

Nope

The AWD and Performance use the same drive unit (which is motor and inverter)

If they didn't his second sentence wouldn't make any sense at all.

What would they be "sorting" if the actual unit wasn't the same part as the AWD?

My guess is that the rear motors are sorted and then go either to the performance variant, or the RWD variant. Otherwise, it would seem that the AWD is simply a "detuned" performance version using the same f/r motors.

Motor-wise, that's exactly what the P is from what we've been told.

Again- Elons tweet is-

Elon Musk said:
AC induction front & switched reluctance, partial permanent magnet rear. Silicon Carbide inverters in both. Performance drive units are lot sorted for highest sigma output & get double the burn-in.

He mentions both motors- then states the P ones are lot sorted and burned in twice as long. Which is only possible if they're the same motor part number wise- and they just put the best-testing ones in P cars.

It's possible other parts are upgraded to enable performance- like with the S it was fuse and contactors on the batteries- but Elon has given us no reason to think the motors themselves are any different front or rear beyond the binning.
