United Parcel Service said Tuesday it will purchase 125 Tesla Semis, the largest order for the all-electric truck to date.

UPS has also provided Tesla with real-world UPS trucking lane information as part of the company’s evaluation of the vehicle’s expected performance for the UPS duty cycle, according to a release. UPS frequently partners with suppliers of emerging vehicle technologies to help them develop solutions that prove ready for stringent UPS use-cases.

UPS has established a goal for 25 percent of the electricity it consumes to come from renewable energy sources by 2025. By 2020, UPS plans expects one in four new vehicles purchased annually will be an alternative fuel or advanced technology vehicle, up from 16 percent in 2016. The company also set a new goal that by 2025, 40 percent of all ground fuel will be from sources other than conventional gasoline and diesel, an increase from 19.6 percent in 2016.

The company operates one of the largest private alternative fuel and advanced technology fleets in the U.S. with more than 8,500 vehicles. This includes all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), propane, and renewable natural gas (RNG)/biomethane.

“For more than a century, UPS has led the industry in testing and implementing new technologies for more efficient fleet operations. We look forward to expanding further our commitment to fleet excellence with Tesla,” said Juan Perez, UPS chief information and engineering officer. “These groundbreaking electric tractors are poised to usher in a new era in improved safety, reduced environmental impact, and reduced cost of ownership.”

Other major companies that have pre-ordered the Tesla Semi include Walmart, J.B. Hunt, and Sysco. Prior to UPS, the largest single pre-order was 100 trucks for PepsiCo.

Initial interest is clearly good. But these companies do a _lot_ of evaluation. The tough job will be translating evaluation into acceptance.
I doubt very much acceptance will be an issue in 2019 (more likely 2020/21) if the specs Tesla gave are legit. 2-3-4 years is more than enough time.

By then, there won't be any resistance to EVs and ICE vehicles will be viewed as dinosaurs by a good many people, not just us Tesla enthusiasts.

My son is a package driver for UPS. I hope he will be able to see those nice semis at the hub in the mornings in a few years when he gets to work.

Currently his location has about six totally electric package trucks. They charge overnight on a J1772. He drives one occasionally, and he says the range is generally less than 125 miles. UPS needs better all-electric package trucks too!
