Use of 4680 battery

Did we learn on Battery Day this new battery will go in ms Plaid models? Assuming yes, model S Plaid will need a new battery compartment with different cooling design. We were also told the battery compartment becomes a structural component of the vehicle. These changes sound like a major change to the manufacturing of ms vehicles.

Manufacturing two frames and two battery compartments for the same model vehicle is a poor way to streamline production. When 4680 production yield is sufficient for low volume ms, do you think all ms will have the same battery?

I say the new battery will be very limited in production at first, but obviously, as production scales, all Teslas will use them. The Plaid model will just be a transition for the rest of the Models S production, and eventually all new Teslas produced. Initially, the Plaid, Cybertruck, and Roadster will use the new battery. It is logical to assume any completely new models will also be designed to use the battery, and the first retrofit will likely be the Models S since the Plaid shares a common structure. Other models will be included as production of the new battery expands. Of course, a newer technology may change things, but I think this is the way it will be assuming current facts.

It’s no longer sufficient to use battery size (4680) to distinguish battery cell design or capability. It possible the 4680 cells in the Model S Plaid will have different chemistry than the 4680 cells in CT or Semi. This could lead to significantly different properties, while sharing form factor.
