Used 2016 Model S 90D Bermuda (Tesla) Triangle

I might be diagnosed with Used MS 90D Reservation Related Anxiety Disorder. Ok, seriously...

First, l should note that we recently (Mid-Feb 2019) purchased a new 2019 M3. PERFECT order and delivery. In NH, so we specifically looked for a NY in stock M3. 6 DAYS from order to delivery. Everyone at Tesla was kind and helpful. Delivery at Mt. Kisco, NY took about an hour.

Since we LOVE the M3, I started looking for a used MS in NY. Landed on the 2016 90D listed in Mt. Kisco, NY and pulled the trigger on 4/10/19 after receiving responses from the Sales Advisor 20 minutes (pictures, pricing questions) after my request.

Unfortunately, over the last three weeks, it’s been pretty much radio silence. I received the standard automated order confirmation and “next steps” on 4/10. It took me a day to figure out that it created a new Tesla account (even though I was logged into my Tesla account) for me with my ApplePay email and sent the automated messages to that old email. The automated message also incorrectly listed pickup in MA. I also received what appears to be an automated message from a Delivery Specialist in CA on 4/19. No phone number.

I’ve sent many emails to the SA and DS with questions (trade, financing, delivery). I’ve received one response (from the SA) since the order date and that was to inform me that the delivery would be in NJ (even though it was listed in NY) and provided the trade offer (which I already had from my Tesla account). Even that response ignored my questions. The DS has not responded. No Delivery date or estimate. No answers.

So, now I’ve found the TMC and it has been both informative and frightening. All I know to do it sit back and wait. Meanwhile my trade value is likely going down and I’ve already exceeded the allowed 1,000 miles. Even if it is in NY, but must be delivered in NJ, I have no idea what could take this long. With communication, I wouldn’t even mind the wait. However, this has me questioning both the M3 purchase and MS reservation. I suppose this is the level of service I should now expect?

Any other suggestions? Any luck with Tesla honoring the trade value after exceeding the mileage allowance (especially given their delay)?

I hope to have future updates with good news! At least I found TMC and have a great delivery checklist prepared thanks to you all!

Not to pile on here, but just so you further know that you aren't alone... It's almost been two weeks since I placed my order and I haven't had any luck getting anyone to respond either with an ETA or status update. I've already got everything 100% complete on my end, and did that on the same day I ordered. They also did the same thing to me with my delivery location. Said the car was in North Florida (where I live), but they ended up telling me it's really in Central Florida after my order was placed. Now I have to drive 3 hours to pick it up in Orlando whenever they tell me it's ready. I get that they might be super busy, but this seems like business 101. You can't just ignore your clientele when they have questions and might actually NEED the car! Not sure what to do other than wait. Good luck with your situation!

Was yours new or used? Just curious. Mine is used.

I guess I’m “Spoiled” by traditional premium car dealerships where you drive out with the car the same day. Very strange not having a salesperson hound you to make a decision and get the car, haha.

Have you tried contacting the service center in either NY or NJ to see if they had any information? I would assume if the car was being moved from Manheim to the SC, they would know about it.

Well, it has been less than 24 hours since my original post and I've heard from FOUR Tesla representatives. This may sound familiar from other members, but apparently my DS was ill and I needed to wait on her return to proceed. Odd, but I'll take it since I have a appointment in 2 DAYS to pick up the MS. All paperwork is complete and the Purchase Agreement is loaded into the account. I'll let you know how delivery goes! I know I'm being greedy, but I'm hoping for a 2nd perfect delivery experience. Good Luck to you as well!

Good Idea, thanks, but they actually contacted me today before I had a chance. Actually, two DS called me within 20 minutes asking me to call back to the pickup Delivery Center. When it rains, it pours!

Oh, I LOVE not having the traditional experience, when it works as expected. I attempted to buy a BMW before the MS and hope to never go through that again! The M3 is new and the MS is a low miles used 2016.

Yes - if they sent out a simple email once a week (even just to say things are in progress and you haven't been forgotten about) would do wonders to alleviate anxiety about the process.
This ^

It would be so simple (you'd think) and would alleviate most of my, and probably the other guys in here, stress.

Also, I just heard from my delivery advisor today as well! She didn't use the "sick" excuse, but she did apologize for the significant delay in getting back to me. No exact ETA, but she assured me they were actively working on getting the car ready to go. Hopefully this is over soon!

I hope all goes well! I’ll describe in a separate post, but all went well with my order.

Well, after all my initial concern, everything came together in the end. Delivery day was a really great day. I spotted my MS in front of Tesla and was immediately impressed. It was nearly flawless. The posted photos really didn’t do it justice. It was washed and the DS was touching up (cleaning) the car for delivery. He introduced himself, informed me of the process, offered me coffee and continued cleaning. He then let me take some time with the car. I went through my checklist (with his help). Felt a little funny with my checklist, pen flashlight and tire gauge, but I’m glad I did it. He was very kind and accommodating. Answered all my detailed questions.

As far as issues (which I worried about), there weren’t any I’d consider major. There was one blemish near the back tire where it looked like someone brushed up against something, but you have to try pretty hard to see it. He said they considered it standard wear and tear. One of the door handles clicks/sticks, so I expect it will need replaced eventually. He said it would be under warranty if it failed. The LTE stopped working during my inspection and froze the screen. A tech came out and worked on it. Fixed it, but said I’d need to run the available update to fix permanently. It worked until about the last hour of my day. Then I ran the update and it hasn’t failed again. It was missing charging adapters, so he gave me new ones. It didn’t have a front license plate, so he put one on for me and even moved my EZ Pass to the MS.

After my inspection, we signed the paperwork including my trade. As far as my trade, I really don’t even know what they did. They asked for the keys and never bothered me with the details. I never felt rushed. I never felt like he was attempting to intimidate me (which is what I’ve experienced with BMW). The paperwork was quick and easy. No up-sells. No BS.

I topped off at the Supercharger and was on my way to NH. Fun drive home except that it rained! I wanted to use my sunroof (that I didn’t know came with the panoramic!). I LOVE THIS CAR. We also have a new M3 and I’m glad I’ll be driving the used MS. Both are amazing, but the MS is more my style and size.

Unless something unexpected happens, I honestly can’t imagine driving any other car! LOVE

I'll share my recent CPO experience: I just picked up my 2015 MS 85 on Tuesday (4/30) from Las Vegas. The CPO experience is definitely not stress free, although we didn't experience many delays the purchase was not very smooth. My wife and I flew into Vegas on Monday with a 10:30 appt. on Tuesday (which got bumped to 11 for some reason) While on the way to the dealership via Uber I got a phone call saying the vehicle was not ready. A bad sensor warning came on and was being replaced. They offered to send us anywhere in Vegas while they fixed the car but we elected to wait there. (Probably saved us some bucks not hitting a casino) About 2 hours later we got our first look at the MS, which exceeded my expectations as it was very clean and well cared for. We finished up the paperwork, got a short 10 minute orientation and hit the road north to Oregon.

Some things that would have help ease my concerns buying a used car sight unseen:
1. No Carfax or similar history.
2. No maintenance records (not even of the bad sensor they had just replaced)
3. The person handling the sale knew next to nothing about the MS I was buying.
4. Tesla CPO advertises a "70 point inspection" What is covered and what were the results and fixes?

The trip from Vegas to Oregon was nearly 1000 miles and it went very well. The trip calculator is wonderful. We hit a 40 MPH headwind during the first leg and after a couple of prompts to slow down in order to make the Supercharger in Hawthorne, a new Supercharger stop in Tonopah appeared on the screen with a 20 minute charge time. It's great that the computer monitors your changing situation and adjusts on the fly.

I've noticed just 2 items on my MS. Yesterday the right rear door handle quit protruding and the "gas" pedal is missing the rubber cover. I see a trip to the service center in the near future.
Overall I'm very pleased but the entire purchase process could definitely be improved.
