Used Delivery Experience

Nice. My front grill kinda looks like that too..did you take off the old plastidip or did you just spray over the old one?
I tried to take of the old first but it wasn’t budging. I didn’t want to order the 50 dollar bottle of solution. So I sprayed about 7 or 8 light coats and it worked like a charm. Can’t even see unevenness where the bare chrome was.

My delivery went smoothly (16 days between deposit and pick-up), but definitely try to be thorough in your walkaround. I arrived about an hour before my scheduled pick-up time and found my car in the parking lot so had a lot of time to inspect it. There was some paint scratching under the front bumper (likely from the previous owner hitting a dip or concrete bump found in some parking spots) so it may be worthwhile to add looking at the bottom of the bumpers to your checklist. I looked silly but also got on the ground to look at the bottom of the battery pack to make sure there weren't any dents. I saved some embarrassment by being there early to do this without someone looking over my shoulder (or down at me, literally). The keys were inside so after I checked the exterior (and made notes on my phone), I then checked in with the person at the desk who said I can go ahead and open the car before my appointment time to check out the interior as well.

The tesla person assisting me at the delivery center had his service department repaint part of the bottom of the bumper (it took about 20 minutes and looks great now), but he did warn that he wasn't sure if every service center would be willing to do that. Otherwise, the car had very minor paint chips and some scratches inside that I thought were fine for a used car. I feel lucky that it was a fairly smooth process after reading this thread and watching some of the videos out there regarding the used car process so wanted to give hope to folks who might be reading this that there are smooth deliveries! Do stay active in controlling the process though (email/call/text, as needed, to make sure your delivery process is on track). Good luck!

I should add that even though I was on the ground looking at the battery pack, it is still difficult to see the middle of the battery pack without raising the car (or crawling under completely) since the car is so low to the ground. Just wanted to give people a heads-up before you get down there.

On mine I found a couple of small dents from rocks that were not visible in pictures. Tesla has agreed to fix them.

One more thing: 7/32 on fronts as 4/32 rear.
Brand new these tires are 10/32. Not sure if you can complain on this part.

Just placed my order for a used late model 2014 Model S 85 with Autopilot and Tech pack yesterday morning, with the pickup scheduled in Chicago. So far I have completed all the tasks and am awaiting the final bill of sale so I can pass along to my CU. I have gotten two emails and a phone call from the Tesla rep so far, so pretty good! He mentioned he would start the process of moving it from the storage facility to the deliver center and will take 3-4 days while they get it detailed. Hopefully the last portion of the delivery is this smooth!

Did you ever reach out about your tires? Mine are all 5/32 and 4/32 in some spots, one of them the entire inner tire is bald. Apparently this passed their 71 point inspection???

Here are some photos of my current tires, the DOT code is from 2017 so I know these have a lot of miles on them, probably the original tires.

I remember seeing some spec for the minimum tread depth that they'd sell a used car with - you might be able to find it if you search around here. That being said, they're quite tight lipped about the whole inspection process so it's probably just going to come down to whether your particular SC will actually replace the tires. Seems like a bad idea on their part to sell a car with worn out tires. Possible liability issues. Then again, a lot of their choices these days seem like bad ideas.

I did haven’t heard back yet. I’d say a bald tire won’t even pass a safety inspection and this needs to be replaced by them.

Tire condition played a significant part in my recent used purchase experience. Maybe I'll get around to posting a recap of the entire experience (mostly positive), but man sometimes the way these guys do business leaves one scratching their head...

During my delivery appointment (2015 S85 - 28K miles), I was allowed/encouraged to inspect the car prior to signing the paperwork and finalizing the purchase. So far so good! Overall, the car looked great. One of the first items on my inspection checklist was to check the tires (condition, tread, matching, etc). The car had the Primacy MXM4s, and it was obvious in 2 seconds that the rear tires were almost completely worn smooth. Unfortunately, I hadn't had the foresight to bring either a US quarter (4/32" guide) or a US penny (2/32" guide), but even by eyeballing it, the 2 rears were clearly less than the minimum requirement per Tesla's own policy. The fronts weren't great either (ended up being 4/32" on one and 7/32" on the other) but at least they appeared safe.

The tires ended up being my only concern, so I pointed them out the delivery rep (clueless), and she fetched a service adviser who came over to listen to my concern. He said he would take care of it (which I took to mean "yes, anybody with eyes can see those rear tires are as bald as howie mandell") and I went on to finalize the purchase paperwork while he drove the car to the service area of the delivery center to have a technician do whatever.

After the surprisingly brief paperwork process (2 forms), the service adviser returned and informed that indeed the tires are all 4/32", within spec, and that there was nothing he could do as they met the minimum standard. He was obviously lying to my face, but emotion overcame logic and I accepted his response thinking maybe I'm being overly concerned and wanting to get home.

When I arrived back at home, after a brief family celebration, my thoughts wandered back to the tires and I checked them again with a quarter (I don't own a tire tread gauge). Not even close to Washington's noggin -- exactly as I had thought! Over the next few days, I attempted to get some resolution via email with my sales adviser as well as an inside delivery adviser. You can guess how that went, either no response at all, or a vague reply promising a follow-up which never happened. I never even knew the name of the delivery person who conducted my delivery so I didn't even attempt that route.

Finally after a few days of futility, I took the car back to the delivery center in the morning before they got too busy (during my original delivery appointment in the evening, the DC was CHAOS) and explained my case to the delivery supervisor there. Finally! He was in complete agreement and immediately wrote a due bill for 2 replacement tires. He suggested I drive down to the service center (in Costa Mesa they're a block apart from either other) and make an service appointment to have the new tires installed. At the service center (more chaos), I made the appointment and decided to have all 4 tires replaced, 2 per due-bill and 2 at my cost; I selected the OEM Primacy tires. The earliest appointment was 3 weeks away (shocking right?). I lobbied for an earlier time as this should have all been done at time of delivery. Sorry, 3 weeks. I took the appointment. Eventually, through mashing the "edit appointment" button on the App, I was able to get a slot about 10 days out which seemed like small moral victory.

When I arrived for my appointment, the service adviser checked me in and had me wait in the lounge while he checked on availability of the tires. Availability? They literally have a wall completely full of tires. I instantly knew what was coming next. Almost like a bad dream in slow motion, he returned to confirm that they didn't have the Primacy tires (WTH) in stock and did I want the Goodyear Touring instead or yada yada yada. I should have demanded that he propose to me how they would resolve this instead of forcing me to figure it out, but I agreed to just take the alternate tires which ended up being about the same price. Frustration!

Ultimately the tires were installed and life is good but, but it seems that at every turn, where Tesla has a choice to embrace outstanding customer service or to treat their customers like garbage, they choose the latter. I'm most upset about being lied to in person, to my face, by the service supervisor but really there we multiple opportunities for Tesla to show goodwill in this case.

Finally, it turns out when the service center takes in a vehicle for any service, they perform a "courtesy inspection", where they adjust the tire pressure and record the tread depth on the service paperwork. My paperwork showed: Passenger Rear: 1, Driver Rear 1. I don't know if the units are 1/32" or mm, but neither met the minimum. I was more than a little tempted to confront the delivery center service supervisor with this documentation, but I decided to let it drop and enjoy my new used car instead.

Hey guys, any experience with car registration? My car was delivered a couple weeks ago in New Jersey and I only have 2 more days left on my temporary registration. What was your experience with this previously? Who should I contact to address this issue? Have been sending emails to my DA and SA and nobody answers me. Called the 1-800 and cannot manage to speak to anybody.

HELP

(Btw, I am at Colorado now and have to go back driving to Florida in about a week). I live in Florida and if Tesla sends me my registration, it will be mailed to Florida

I picked up my car on 5/30 and got all of the paperwork (title, bill of sale etc) on June 12th. They sent everything via fedex signature required. Not sure in your case but I have heard of people waiting far longer because Tesla still doesn't have the title in their possession.

I’m having a pretty bad experience with the used delivery through Tesla. Ordered and paid in full on 6/18/20 and still haven’t received my car yet. It’s still in Cali and I’m in TX. One guy is saying it takes 4 days once loaded on the truck and another is saying it takes 2 days. I keep getting different answers every time I speak to a different person. It’s pretty frustrating especially when they made me buy insurance on 6/24 and paid 2k for transport. If I would’ve received my car by now, within the 3 week range as told, then I wouldn’t complain about the 2k but if it’s approaching the 3rd week tmrw and it’s still not in TX yet! I’m just annoyed at this point because my car is totaled so I have no car.

Good to see that literally nothing has changed with the used Tesla buying process over the course of 1 year!! I am waiting to be contacted by the delivery specialist; I did everything I could do a week ago when I "ordered" the vehicle. Already there has been "hail damage to the car" which is being fixed "as we speak." There is no communication and I'm pretty sure there is nothing that can be done to speed things up.

Yes there is, you can always cancel and walk away and buy something else. Much quicker :)
I'd be wary about how they fix hail damage...

There were 2 hail-damaged spots.
"Let me know right away if there is anything different than in the pictures and we'll make it right" (sure, it will probably take another 2 months but hey, it's free, right?)
So you don't trust Tesla and their used $76k Model S P100Ds?

Nope, not at all. Buying used from Tesla is a pure gamble. It may work out but it also may backfire on you hard. With that said, yes, they do have the warranty and will fix most issues, but it's still a gamble.

I feel I got lucky. Within 6 or so months after getting a used S from Tesla, I only had about 4 mobile tech visits and 3 service center trips. So yeah, if I could go back in time, I'd slap myself and tell me to buy another car (not tesla).
