Used Teslas now 1 year / 10k mile warranties

It depends on the vehicle, some have an additional year/10k added to the factory warranty:

2018 Model X | Tesla

Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty
May 2022 / 50,000 total miles

Used Vehicle Limited Warranty
Additional 1 year / 10,000 miles
Begins after Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty expires

That car already has 31,236 miles on the odometer.

50,000 - 31,236 = 18,764 basic warranty miles + 10,000 used warranty = 28,764 total warranty miles.

Now is 10/2020 and it'll good until 5/2022 or 1 and 6 or 7 months + 1 additional year = about 2 years and a half.

That's still quite worse than previous versions of warranties.

Ok confirmed with Tesla, those of us that purchased a used Tesla prior to today your (additional) warranty is still intact. Those that purchase used vehicles after TODAY you only get the original warranty and the 1 year / 10k miles after delivery.

Just to clarify to people if you purchased a 2015 Model S Tesla with 43k miles you were given a 4 year / 57 k mile warranty that was effective after delivery date. If your car had over 50k miles then you would get 2 years up to 100k miles on the odometer after delivery date. So this means a 2015 Model S with 53k miles got a 2 year 47k mile warranty that was in effect starting on delivery date.

For those that made the purchase prior to today you have that additional warranty, only for cars purchased starting today is that now gone.

Truly “used cars” now for sure. Tesla sick of taking a bath on all these used cars with 100k mile warranties it seems.

Taking a bath because they aren’t as reliable as Tesla claims. My P85D would have cost me $30K+ In 2 years of ownership if not for the warranty.

The lesson is: DO NOT buy a used car from Tesla. Certainly not without a warranty on the sketchy older packs in the S and X.

The thing about anecdotes is they're anecdotal. In 110,000 miles, my car has cost me $326 in out of warranty repairs (no ESA).

So yeah, it's hit or miss. Anyone primarily worried about repair costs is probably not best served by a startup car company selling emerging technology. Toyota or Lexus will happily take your money.

For those that have said “the documents are gone from the glovebox” guys...the warranty docs have been gone for MONTHS! Honestly until Tesla makes these changes how many of us go and peruse them? I could obtain the new/used warranty pdf but the actual one that pertained to MY vehicle had been gone since I believe sometime in March.

I don’t think Tesla is getting rid of their extra warranty because of all the “older” cars needing service but just the sheer volume of used cars they have now. People upgraded to the Y. People will upgrade to the CT and the new plaid.

many mom bought a used CPO Mercedes. It’s a gorgeous car...it only came with the remainder of the original warranty. Also a 2018 and had about 10k miles on the ofo. Tesla is going above and beyond with the extra year plus 10k.

for me. With repairs. Had I not had my warranty (TSB’s and recalls aside) I’d have spent around $1000 out of pocket. (2 door handles and one 12v) I have a 12/14 P85D fwiw

It's not $9k more, it's actually $4,320 less as equipped. It has $12k in extra cost options which would bring the retail price of a new one to $82,620 after the recent price reductions.

This is different and not as bad as it seems initially. Not great of course. Another sign that these cars are costly to maintain.

Previously that 2018 (let’s say it has 30,000 miles on it to illustrate) would have received a new 4 year 50,000 miles from used purchase in 2020 - getting it to 2024 and 80,000 miles.

By adding 1 year and 10,000 miles to the existing warranty and not restarting the warranty, i think it goes to 2023 and 60,000 miles now.

@David.85D correct. Or if you are buying a 2015 tesla with 43k miles you would have 4 years additional warranty with 57k miles. But now a 2015 purchased off the site will have 1 year / 10k.

I, like plenty of others, hate their business practices but believe in their overall mission. I’m a vehicle owner and shareholder. That being said, I’m not going to forget how they have and continue to treat their customer base.

Once a proper competitor emerges, you won’t see me here anymore.

Tesla's used cars were also priced like CPOs, so you were paying for that warranty. I expect they will have to drop prices to move cars now.

if we make lemonade from lemons this should make Loaners a lot more available. I always assumed loaners went away because they sell everything as fast as they could

This makes me wonder how the lease finance companies deal with Tesla’s randomness. The value of an off lease car is wildly different than what went into the residual value calculation. Do you think they eat it? Have a claim against Tesla? What bank would want to take on these leases after getting burned by falling new car prices and slashed service?
