MRI Reveals Mysteries Inside Batteries for Gadgets and Electric Cars | Observations, Scientific American Blog Network what i don't get is why we don't run into a schroedinger's cat scenario? Wouldn't the magnetic fields affect the battery during observation?
well they didnt quite look at a battery, just a half cell. they had a Li/Li cell and were able to resolve dendrite formation in 3D by MRI while it is happening (in-situ) and also obtain NMR spectra of the event in situ as well. Now, whether the magnetic fields affect the test sample (battery of half cell) it can be easily detected by the potentiostat which is controlling the electrochemical event.
