I'm new to the Tesla family with my Model 3. Has anyone used the valet mode? If I read the manual correctly the car cannot be locked in the valet mode. Is this correct? Also is there a way to allow the trunk to open in valet mode? If you leave your car for work to be done and you want them to be able to lock the car I guess you have to leave a key card.

I've used it. You still need a key card in valet mode. The difference is that they can't open the front trunk and speed/acceleration is limited. I have noticed they often forget to lock the car or can't figure out how, so I lock it using the app once they park it.

Just a FYI, I left my car with a valet today and left the key card near the cup holder. I walked away and the car locked (with the card still in the car). Fortunately, the attendant was able to track me down (walking down the street in NYC) and I unlocked the vehicle remotely. I did not put the car in valet mode. I use my phone as a key.

I have to go back to the manual but I am surprised the car locked with the key card in the car.

Is the Key Card limited to just the Model 3? I just received my Model S this past weekend so still getting up to speed on everything. If the Key Card is not limited to the Model 3, how to do find/obtain one for my S?

    Thanks.

Model S has a fob, not a key card. Your delivery specialist must not have spent much time explaining the car to you. Please RTFM carefully— this is not like any car you have ever owned.

Hi I'd like to bump this thread up - hopefully taking delivery of my model 3 (or maybe CPO S?) soon and am trying to figure out the logistics in my NYC garage I use for work.

I know the manager of the garage doesn't like dealing with Teslas because they lock by themselves sometimes, he's also been told by drivers that they have to take the key fob out, but the valet turnover in his garage is so high it is hard for him to keep track of everyone.

Does anyone have a tried-and-true NYC garage method? Turn off walk-away-lock and leave the key card in the car? How about any model S drivers? What happens if you just leave the key fob in the car?
    thx in advance.

Walk away locking only works if it detects your phone key inside then moving out.... if unlocked with the Key Card it won't auto lock moving in or out of the car with that. So if you left your key card in when you're walking out with your phone key then it will lock. However if the Valet used it to open with key card, drive, it won't auto lock unless they tap the pillar.

Bumping this for some further clarification...

If I initially unlocked with my phone, but then activated a keycard (placed by cupholder) when arriving to valet, will my car still auto-lock when I walk away?

Think this is what happened to me the other day at hand car wash - thought I was doing it right, but then had guys come track me down in waiting room telling me car was locked. I opened car up and then turned off my bluetooth to fix it temporarily.

I just valeted my car, I put my car in valet mode, and gave him a key card. He could move the car around. The doors did not lock when I walked away/

I think that without your phone present, they won’t display. But I could be wrong...

Bumping this thread for further clarification. I keep the option to lock when walk away always turned on. Will Valet mode disable this feature or do I have to disable manually before I walk away from the car?

I just had the same thing happen even though it was in Valet mode. First time leaving it with someone so I may have done something wrong.

I have my Tesla set to require a pin before moving gears, is there a way to require valet to enter a temporary code before they put the vehicle in gear? I also don't like the thought that it doesn't auto lock and anyone with the key card can drive it.

The S/X have key fobs that work like other cars where it shouldn’t lock with it in the car. The key card just has an NFC chip for the model 3 for the Driver’s side door and near arm rest to drive. If you close the doors, you should make sure to hand the key card to the valet attendant or it will lock.

Valet mode is described around page 40 of the manual and limits a bunch of things but not behavior of the locks.

Why the heck would a valet require a top speed of 70 mph. This should be adjustable or at the very least a lot lower.
