Looks like Vic Government have announced more funding.
$5m for 141 chargers.

6 chargers between the border and Lakes Entrance should make the Princess Hey far more navigable.

Mind you at $5m/141 = $35k per site.
Possibly suggests only one outlet per site which is not ideal imho.

More detail including a list of locations, operators and charge speed here: Destination Charging Across Victoria Program - specifically this doc: https://www.energy.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/word_doc/0027/551961/DCAV-Recommended-Projects.docx. Looking like most of the chargers will be finished by the middle of next year.

Doesn't look like anything faster than 50kW.

Just had a quick look at this page - includes the line: "These chargers, depending on their power rating, can provide 100 km worth of range in as little as 10 minutes."

I don't think that's possible with a 50 kW charger? Absolute maximum theoretical power supplied in 10 minutes = 8.3 kWh. That would need a car that uses 8.3 kWh/100km.

100 km in 10 minutes implies a 100 kW charger but not a single one of the entries in the Word document includes that.

So going through that Word document and excluding any locations which were <50 kW, or where the recipient got a grant which is a mix of 50 kW and slower speeds and the wording makes it unclear as to where the 50 kW would be, and excluding urban Melbourne locations....

I've added them to my spreadsheet of all planned/future sites.

Existing key:
Orange = 350 kW
Black = 50 kW
Grey = 25 kW

New entries:
Black w/pink border = new 50 kW (Evie)
Black w/red border = new 50 kW (all other recipients)

For those keeping score - thats 55 sites for Evie and 25 for all other recipients combined.

Unrelated to these new entries - eagle eyes will notice I've included the ARENA grants for Canberra, but not Melbourne. Correct. Melbourne would just be a solid blob of black dots. I only have so much time! National version of this map coming closer to the end of the year.

I notice DCAV has slightly updated their map to include the previously government assisted sites (Chargefox's 350 kW locations, and Charging The Regions sites)

Curious that some of the new locations are missing from DCAVs map, compared to my map - Buchan, Dunkeld, Warburton aren't there. (I'd expect my map to be missing some as I excluded a few, like AC only sites, but this is the other way around).

Quoting from Cann River thread.

Locations for East Gippsland chargers.
I assume the description is a bit off an council is using both DCAV and LRCI funding for these chargers and they will be operated by Evie.

"Stage one is funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program and will see a 50kW fast charger installed in the following towns:
• Bairnsdale: 101-121 Nicholson Street
• Omeo: Tongio Road parallel carpark opposite the Council depot
• Orbost: 5 Wolseley Street carpark
• Cann River: Ward Street park"

Omeo is also interesting as it wasn't on the prior lists.
About 200km Albury-Omeo over the mountains .

That entire page is a bit confusing! There are some double ups, and some new locations... but there are with the DCAV grant recipients as well.

From my reading, it looks like this is what's happening:

DCAV funding was granted for the following 9 locations:
  • Bairnsdale (Evie)
  • Bruthen (Evie)
  • Buchan (EGSC)
  • Cann River (Evie)
  • Lakes Entrance 1 (Evie)
  • Lakes Entrance 2 (EGSC)
  • Mallacoota (EGSC)
  • Orbost (Evie)
  • Paynesville (Evie)
That webpage lists the following:
  • Installed by council - without DCAV support (4) - Bairnsdale, Omeo, Orbost, Cann River
  • Installed by council - with DCAV support (3) - Mallacoota, Buchan, Lakes Entrance
  • Installed by private companies on council land (4) - Paynesville, Lakes Entrance, Cann River, Bruthen
If we combine all those lists - plus add in the Tesla superchargers (1 official, 1 speculated), we get this:

Installed by: On land: DCAV funding:
Bairnsdale 1EGSCCouncil - 101-120 Nicholson StNo
Bairnsdale 2EviePresumed privateYes
Bairnsdale SCTeslaPrivate - McDonalds(?)No

OmeoEGSC Council - Tongio Rd opp depotNo

There is a chance that they've come to their senses and, when grant conditions allow it, pooled funds on some of those double up locations. I mean, how much council land is there in Cann River? :p

There is not a lot of distinction between the council parking area at 101-121 Nicholson and the McDonald's parking. It is really all just the one parking area, along with the location council information centre. I think it is likely that the Bairnsdale SC will be co-located with the council charger and maybe even Evie charger.

I'm really excited about Corryong, Omeo and Bruthen. One of my favourite roads is the Omeo Hwy between Omeo and Mitta Mitta. Kiandra to Corryong is brilliant too. Being able to head over the mountains with no worries about charging is great. And the slower charging rates just means I can recharge over a meal instead of a rushed pit stop. Cooma to Bruthen

I think Evie is winning a lot more grants.

As to why, I'm not sure - Chargefox had an established history of building charging stations, Evie had zero experience at the time of getting their first grant and even today they haven't built more than about 5 sites outside of the funding rounds. Hardware for the most part is identical.

- ARENA 350 kW networks - Chargefox got funding for ~22 sites, Evie got funding for ~42 sites.
- ARENA Future Fuels - Evie got funding for sites in every state and territory, Chargefox only got funding for 2 states
- DCAV funding - Evie got 55 sites. Chargefox got four.

Both offer their services to 3rd party networks:
- Chargefox provides billing services for Qld Electric Highway, RAC WA, Electric Highway Tasmania.
- Evie provides billing for Charging the Regions (North-west Vic), ACTEWAGL.

Chargefox have got the SA Government's network which is a big win, and will be the first major rollout not using Tritium hardware.

The CEO of Evie is basically a property guy. Chris Mills got rich founding a company in the UK doing mobile site property deals in Europe, then worked for Optus for 5 years building mobile networks, Sprint in the USA doing the same, before being hired to run Evie.

And when you think about it, Evie is really a property business, not an EV charging business. Chris also pinched some really good people from Optus who know what they are doing.

So I am not surprised if Evie is winning a lot more grants, generally gets better locations than the others, and were ‘brave’ enough to charge a noticeably premium price for their product - they have a top-gun team that can work the numbers.

EVIE‘s Chairman and founder is Trevor St Baker. He’s a long time big hitter in the energy space including being the owner of a number of Power Stations including Vale’s Point.

Have only once ever used an EVIE charger on a trip to QLD when there was no other choice.
P.S. He is an early owner of a Model S.

Well it‘s possible for anyone to have an Epiphany. That was 2017, this is now :). Money talks, and the fact that since 2017 South Australia now has the lowest wholesale electricity prices in the country and the most reliable grid (no clunking coal plants that can break down) could convince even the hardest-nose businessman they were wrong and rushed to judgement. Maybe he’s repented?

Evie claims that all its chargers are powered by 100% renewable energy, which I assume it means they buy the equivalent amount of renewable energy from solar/wind gens.
