[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Consumer Reports has posted a video elaborating on its decision to not recommend the Tesla Model 3.
The magazine’s review mostly criticized the Model 3’s braking performance, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk says will be improved via a software update. In its initial report, Consumer Reports said:
“The Tesla’s stopping distance of 152 feet from 60 mph was far worse than any contemporary car we’ve tested and about 7 feet longer than the stopping distance of a Ford F-150 full-sized pickup.”
On an edition of the magazine’s podcast “Talking Cars,” Consumer Reports staff members explained their findings and offered some back story on the effort to secure a second test vehicle to make sure the first findings weren’t a fluke.
Further, Consumer Reports Auto Test Direct Jake Fisher discussed an hour-long phone conversation with Musk about how software-controlled antilock braking systems can be tweaked for better results.
“It seems like they’ve seen it and are trying to validate a change they can put out over the air,” Fisher said.
“If those stopping distances are down to where we expect to see them…it would raise the score enough to recommend the vehicle and be very competitive in its class.”
Musk told Fisher that a software fix could be pushed as soon as this weekend.
