I think it's likely I just happened to pick a configuration that's built and unassigned. If you ordered the same config and no VIN, I'd think that was super-weird.
Did you order 18" wheels? If you look at the Invite spreadsheet (12-28-17 New Invite / Configuring / Delivery Spreadsheet), you'll see that people who ordered the 19" wheels got VINs a lot faster. I'm guessing Tesla is trying to maintain some amount of diversity in the Model 3 fleet by prioritizing delivery of cars with 19" wheels, because most people opt for the 18" wheels.

It could be something as simple as a supplier backlog for the 18's ... maybe Tesla predicted the wrong product mix.

Since I am a Southern California MSM waiting for my VIN, I thought I would look at the spreadsheet to see who was likely in front of me... Wow, in the spreadsheet there were 10 people with earlier configuration dates (late February, mostly) that look like they might be using the Redondo pickup location like me that are still waiting for their VIN. Ouch.
PS- I wish there was a better way to filter the spreadsheet by pickup location

Same vin range and location as me. Have they reached out to schedule delivery yet? I haven't heard anything.

6 weeks since configuring on 2/23 invite 2/22 and no VIN yet. , red, aero, line stander on 3/31, 6th in line St. Louis Mo

Perhaps Tesla is favoring the 19" wheels in order to squeeze out just a little more margin.

Wouldn't be surprised -- also wouldn't be surprised if they also favor paint colors other than black as that's another $1k.
If it's true then unless I'm lucky with timing, I may have a wait a bit for my config: black / aero.
