Virginia Plates... How Long from Purchase to Plates/Registration Arriving?

If you've picked up your car in NOVA how long has it taken to receive your permanent plates/registration from the Tyson's delivery center?

I got 60 day temp plates from tyco. I got my perm plates about about the 50 day mark.

I got my permanent plates from the VA DMV at about the 40 day mark.

Title took about 60 days.

If you wanted to do personalized license plate for your Tesla. Can you do that from the get go ? or do you have to wait for the non personalized plate to be mail to you first ? Thx.

It’s usually exactly the month: the day the temps expire. The last car (last November) they were so swamped it was a day later. I really doubt anyone cares that your temps are a day over.

I would get the normal random ones and then get the new ones. Better than Tesla messing it up or being late. They have enough to do and are always just in time getting any plates to you.

Virginia is electronic title now. Check your DMV account, I don’t believe you get paper automatically unless you request it. I also recall that took a while longer than the registration when I got my 3 in 2018 but I don’t believe they were all electronic then.

Interesting. They gave me new plates when I picked it up in Richmond (Sept 2020). No paper plates. They almost messed up the registration (tried to use a city instead of the county I live in). Handed me the registration to carry in the car. The title was mailed and seemed to take a long time though (Covid?).

I thought if you have existing plates on your trade-in, you could just swap those on to the new Tesla?

I had the option to transfer the plates from another car to the Tesla but found out it would actually cost more than just getting new plates. New plate fees applied along with the transfer fee so I just went with the new plates and kept the old car (now fitted with antique plates).

And they put on new plates they had available.

Picked up MY on March 12th. 30 day temp tags and no plates yet. Checked my DMV account and nothing is listed for the Tesla. Will Tyco issue another temp tag if I go beyond April 10th or just keep driving it? Lol
