VW just broke the overall track record in 7:57.148 minutes.

16 seconds faster than the previous track record.

We knew it was coming. Electrics will likely end up taking lots of lap records as manufacturers shift focus.

Tesla's original Roadster and the Model S proved this was coming.

The VW I.D. R Pikes Peak, the Porsche 919 Hybrid, and the Audi R18 24 Hours of Le Mans look very similar.

I suspect that the Pikes Peak might have be designed by the same racing team
who have been dismantled following the Le Mans departure.

I wonder if it was a marketing decision to put a VW badge instead of a Porsche or an Audi one?

Or may be it is another way to cover up the emission scandal?

I noticed the same similarity between the 919, R18 and I.D.R ... the shared design certainly shorted the full EV development time.
From a Marketing perspective, the decision to use the VW badge was a another calculated case of Green Washing the Diesel scandal

They have stolen the design from Toyota.

It is. My hope is that "the sound" will replace the "vroom vroom" of the ICE as the mark of a performance car. Now for the problem - what should we call it?

Great video... more details here: VW ID.R electric racecar runs fastest emission-free lap of all time on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife - Electrek

The custom-built all-electric race car that weighs “under 2,500 lbs”, is equipped with two electric motors capable of “680 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, giving it a 0-60 time of 2.25 seconds,” and a 43 kWh battery pack. VW also made some modifications to adapt it for the demanding Nürburgring-Nordschleife race track.

Unfortunately, the vehicle and driver were still far from the overall record. The record for non-series/non-road-legal vehicles is held by Timo Bernhard in a Porsche 919 Hybrid EVO with an impressive 5:19.546 time – almost a minute faster than the VW ID.R.

Man... you know how many times I crashed on that course (gran turismo, haha), can’t imagine real life at that speed on that track
