Volume Turning Itself Down at Certain Levels MY Bluetooth Iphone Spotify App

Hello all, hoping someone out there can steer me in the right direction to solve this minor annoying issue. Maybe there is some setting I need to change in my audio path to correct this issue. Here is a video of what is happening and more information below.

Model Y Bluetooth IPhone Spotify Issue

I took delivery of MY about 3 weeks ago. I absolutely love the car and have no fit, finish, or performance issues whatsoever. The only issue I am having is with the car audio volume levels in certain scenarios. My preferred audio path is using the spotify app on my iphone streaming bluetooth to the Tesla. In the music section I am connected to phone. My issue is that the volume will turn itself down at certain levels. Specifically at the approximate 60-85% max volume range. Example - say I am at 60% max volume (which I call set point because this is where it automatically turns itself down to) if I bump it up to approx 75% max volume it immediately reverts back to that set point of 60%. Same thing happens if I go a notch or two higher or lower (65% or 80% etc). The wierd thing is that doesn't happen once I take it up to 90-100% max volume it will stay there. In my example video I show this at the end how it won't turn down if I turn it up to 90%+. Once its passed approx 90% max volume it will stay there and not turn itself back down to 60%. I prefer my music in the 75%-80% max volume range. 90%+ is blaring and somewhat distorting and the set point of 60% is just a little too low for my taste.

I am on the newest Tesla software version of 2021.4.3 568eaf33670d. Latest iphone software of 14.4. Newest iphone IOS allows you to choose device type for Bluetooth devices which I've enabled CAR STEREO. I have searched through all the major Tesla forums and tried all suggestions in previous threads but I am still having this issue. Tonight I tried using the built in Spotify App through Tesla and this problem wasn't occuring. I will play more with that after work to confirm that this is only happening in Iphone Spotify app. This leads me to believe that this is an iPhone/Spotify app issue not the Tesla UI. I have gone through all settings in the Spotify iphone App and iphone settings and I don't have any volume limits set or anything like that. I have a mobile service appointment set up for next week but would like to solve this before then and not waste the service teams time.

Seperate question if I use the built in Spotify App on the Tesla infotainment center is it streaming from LTE or using the songs I have saved on my iphones harddrive. When I use the built in Spotify Tesla App and have the Spotify App open on my phone the current track is playing with the correct time in the track. I ask this because have all of my playlists downloaded to my phone in "Very High Quality" Bitrates for best sound quality. I would much rather prefer to play music at the highest quality bitrate. It's kind of hard to tell by switching back in forth between the two. If anyone knows for sure that would be highly appreciated information.

Thank you all for reading and for any help or suggestions you might suggest.

To use the native Tesla Spotify application you must have a Spotify Premium account. You need to activate the Tesla Premium Connectivity to stream Spotify using LTE. The Tesla Spotify application will only stream Spotify content using your home Wifi, other Wifi or LTE. Your Spotify playlists should sync with the Tesla but in my experience the Tesla Spotify application often loses track of the current play list. If you care about audio quality you may want to compare the BT streaming sound quality with the Tesla Spotify sound quality. I found that the streamed audio playback via the Tesla Spotify application sounded better than the BT connection.

I’ve got a brand new MY, and I experience the same behavior but see a broader scope to the issue. Not ready to conclude it’s a bug.

The newest firmware has different default volume settings for different sources. My iPhone defaults to 80%, but is inaudible at lower settings. Switch to Spotify and it’s set to 25% but allows manual control.

I suspect the MY amp controls or responds to the input source levels. You might be on to something with the iPhone settings option. “Car stereo” may cut output levels and the amp tries to compensate. But. We have to able to make the phone calls louder. Can’t start with audible at 80%.

I'm having a similar issue with the NATIVE SPOTIFY APP.
When listening to music while driving, the volume on vocals is really difficult to hear.
It almost feels like it's turning it down...but mostly just the Vocals (or High End?).
I've tried messing with every SPOTIFY app setting I can on my iPhone...but it doesn't make a difference.
Anyone else experience anything like this?

When I'm parked...or sitting still...it's fine.
Only when I'm driving / driving at higher speeds.

thanks.

Hi! Glad to know I am not the only one experiencing this. I have a M3P (currently running 2021.4.12) and I have this exact same issue with the exact same setup. Already have a ticket with a Tesla specialist, only need to make a video like you did and send it to them to investigate. It didn't ring any bell add their end for now.

Tested this issue with a phone call but couldn't reproduce. This is interesting though because that might point that it has something to do with the iOS settings. The confusing thing here is that every possible audio limitation or noice-reduction setting is already turned off.

Will update this thread if Tesla replied to my vid.

Just got a reply from Tesla Support on this:

“The issue you are experiencing with the audio volume is due to a phone/vehicle volume setting mismatch. The issue is currently under investigation with a fix expected within future firmware updates (no date communicated).

We can't communicate on work in progress and future improvement in general I am afraid, but this is an area where Tesla's engineers and developers are constantly working on for a better customer experience.”

Hoping the fix will be rolling out soon :)

I have a 2021 Model Y and experience the same issue streaming music from my iPhone 12 via Bluetooth. Whenever I try to raise volume above around 80%, the volume defaults to 75%. Have to raise it to 90-95, and it will stick. So it’s always a little too loud or too soft. If I get it just right, the issue reverts once the next track starts, and is again back at 75%. Super annoying.

Yep, have the same issue with my iPhone and using really any music app on the device (Usually use YouTube Music). As soon as I go past about 80% it will just knock itself back down after a couple seconds.. very annoying. Only fix is to max it out at like 100% and it usually stays there.

This issue is annoying. Google lead me to this thread.

Tesla please fix. This same thing has also been happening to me.

Maybe the car is so smart it knows the best volume for your ears :D

I noticed this on a long drive yesterday. Setting volume on the phone did not seem to fix it (for very long anyway). After changing albums or restarting after a charging stop, it always dropped back down to (about?) 75%. Like it at 80-90, and some quiet music needs to be at 100% just to hear it.

What solved the problem for me:

I have been using the native Tesla Tidal app ever since the new update. Only possible with the premium connectivity or, in my case, unlimited cellular data subscription on my iPhone and create a WiFi hotspot for the car. No more volume issues, no more streaming over Bluetooth, and HiFi sound.

Still believe there is a bluetooth volume mismatch that has to be fixed though ;)

Haha, same for me. I have been using Spotify :)

Argh! This is so annoying! Just got my Model 3 and the music turning itself down when using Bluetooth from my iPhone is driving me nuts. Controlling it from the phone itself works but is hardly a good workaround (you can be fined a lot for using a phone when you are driving in the UK!).

Being real, it seems like this problem has existed for years at this point judging by threads I’ve read… they’re never going to fix it are they?

I’ll have to give more thought to getting Spotify or Tidal accounts I guess… really bloody irritating 😝

I have a similar issue with my M3 SR+ facelift with a Hansshow speaker upgrade. I hoped that the problem source is the Hansshow speaker wiring but I think this is some DSP feature to improve the music quality while driving. I think there is a microphone to detect the cabin noise and the DSP is trying to change the volume and manipulate the frequencies to achieve a better experience. Unfortunately it working wrong…

Anyone have a solution to this?

My 2018 Model 3 never did this.
My wife's 2020 Model Y does this.
My 2021 Model 3 P never does this.

She uses her phone through bluetooth. When she connects to my car it's fine. On her car, either of our phones experience this same weird issue. I'd love to find the solution for her.

Just getting in line here... also happens on my 2014 P85D using any app on my iPhone over Bluetooth.

I'm trying to listen to an audiobook. In the older MCU cars, the volume goes from 0 to 11 (or maybe it's 10 now, but used to be 11). So each "number" has three or four clicks when turning the volume control knob or button. If I set the volume to the loudest setting on "9" (meaning one click before "10"), the car automatically resets it to the lowest click on "9" which just isn't loud enough. If I go up to "10" it stays there, but that's just a hair too loud.

Also, using the volume control on the phone doesn't fix anything, as when using BT, both volume controls are linked/synced, and no matter how I have the phone volume set, the car still does the same thing.
