Does anyone know how trade-in sales tax exception is applied along with EV tax exception? For example, if I trade in a car worth 10k, will taxes be exempt on 32k (EV) + 10k (trade-in) = 42k total?

A few pages ago @jam_12 found the answer on the DOR's site. It specifically says you take off the trade in first. So if you buy a Model 3 with a purchase price of $50,000, and trade in a car of $18K or more, you pay no sales tax.

The way I understand it: The trade in value gets subtracted from the new car cost, before the taxes are applied. So the taxes apply for (new car cost MINUS trade in value of old car).

Thanks. This means, in my example 51 - 10 (trade-in) - 32 (EV) = 9k will be taxed, correct?

Yes absolutely without a doubt.
We have a 10 o’clock appointment for tomorrow and that’s exactly what my paperwork shows 56,000 including destination as the original taxable amount with our $7500 trade-in the taxable amount is reduced by $39,500.
I’m in Clark County so I’m just bringing a check for $46,551.25
Obviously that doesn’t include the $3500 that they already have mine

Sounds good. How were the tradein values from Tesla? Did they at least meet the lower end of kbb tradein values? I have a Leaf but I am not sure how Tesla is going to evaluate its value. Would getting a quote from Carmax help?

I've been debating with myself almost endlessly for the last few days, and I still don't know what to do.

Was going to order on Sunday, but had to do taxes.

I ran the numbers today and the Model 3 is going to cost me (after selling my car to use it as the downpayment, and taking into account the federal tax credit) almost EXACTLY what I owe on my 2015 70D.

I don't really want to trade my Model S in on a Model 3 because I doubt Tesla will give me a fair amount for it. So I'd rather sell in, and take advantage of the partial tax exemption if I'm not too late for it.

And, now I just saw that they shut down the production line for up to five days. So I might just go back to my original plan of waiting for the AWD version. I tend to prefer AWD in the PNW.

A lot of what's pushing me to order is fear. Fear that my Model S will more rapidly lose value due to the amount of used Model S's going on the market.

Right now I figure I can sell it for around the $50K-55K range. But, who knows where it will be in 6+ months.

Tesla offered me something around $7300 for my 2010 Prius V with 85,000 miles.
My delivery specialist recommended that I take it to Carmax and have them give me a written quote.
He said they would match Carmax.
I took it to Carmax that same day and they gave me a quote for 7500.
Tesla matched it. The couple hundred bucks for an hour of my time.
The tax exemption on the trade-in still makes it worth doing versus other options.
