Waiting until after battery day to order...

I’m going to order a model 3 but I’m not in a huge hurry (other than the excitement) as my BMW lease runs until mid October. I’m thinking about waiting until battery day before I order in case there’s news that causes me to consider waiting.

Overthinking, stretching out the anticipation, or sensible move? Whatcha think?

Most likely, battery day won't have much for 3 and Y, but we'll see. If you ordered today, you could possibly get delivery before battery day and given a car that was already ready to go that was built before changes were implemented. I would definitely wait since it's so close. That way, if there is a difference, you can just be sure you get the newer features.

I'm in a similar boat. If you order after delivery day, I think there is a chance you'd have to wait until next quarter's batch since it's a pretty late order. So you may miss your mid October timeline. What I did was go ahead and create an order then asked my SA to make my account ineligible for VIN match until after the 22nd. Then after the 22nd once my account becomes eligible again, I pick up right where I left off in the queue.

I am in the same boat. Just sold my car to carvana and waiting to see how battery day goes. I almost pulled the trigger on a SR 35k model but I want to see if something is going to happen with this battery day thing. Maybe in 18 months these cars will get cheaper or the range will increase dramatically. Maybe the SR could be 300 plus mile range?

Same here, sold my Jeep to Carvana last week. Waiting on the battery day to make an informed decision to purchase.

Can someone please explain 'battery day' and when it is going to be built into new cars? What makes this battery so innovative?
We still do not have a vin#, and could wait til this battery revelation happens. Will the cost of the car increase? Will M3's get the new battery? When?
Thanks

No one knows anything about anything you are asking, and wont until after the event. There is no guarantee of a "new battery" in model 3s.

"battery day" is teslas investor day to talk about forward technologies.

Can someone please explain 'battery day'

It's a presentation on Sept 22nd to discuss current and future developments in Teslas battery plans (and possibly some other stuff)

and when it is going to be built into new cars? What makes this battery so innovative?

Answering those questions is the point of the event.

Keep in mind Tesla doesn't use the same battery in all models today- and that will probably still be true on battery day.

So some models (and maybe even specific trims of some models) will likely get new batteries before others, and there may continue to be significant differences in batteries between trims and models.

We still do not have a vin#, and could wait til this battery revelation happens. Will the cost of the car increase?

That depends.

One expectation is Tesla will announce a new higher-end Model S using the very best new battery tech, at a significantly higher price (Elon has essentially said as much a few times).

That's not going into the 3 anytime soon though.

The goal of the mass market cars is to make them cheaper not more expensive.

Will M3's get the new battery? When?
Thanks

Eventually sure. Soon? Probably not the "best" new one.

We know Panasonic already moved to a slightly (~5%) improved battery this month at GF Nevada so they'll probably at least get THAT pretty much immediately.

if you don't even have a VIN yet, don't worry about it.

You'll have a lot more info next Tuesday and can go from there.

Thanks for the information. Great forum.
This AM we received a messages with a Vin#. Also said car would be delivered to NJ around the 28th. If we wanted to pick it up there, Tesla would provide a rental. If I want it delivered to Vermont, the delivery date is pushed back to mid October. Hummm, here i thought independent carriers were hungry for loads?
On another note, we had cancelled our first M3 order on 8/29(configuration change). The vin at that time was 91516. Our new vin today is 95751. So 4235 M3 cars had vin's assigned in 17 days. If all M3's produced in that time were assigned a sequential vin# regardless of configuration, one could ASSUME that Tesla built, on average, about 250 cars a day (if in production 7 days a week). How does that # compare to actual stated production #'s???
Thanks, have a great day.

Looking at the way Teslas sell and the room for growth, I would guess the Model 3 won’t see the technology from battery day for a couple of years.

The Model X and Model S need a boost in sales. New technology should start there, IMHO, and then trickle down.

That's most likely it. If/when the 3 sees new improved battery packs it's going to implemented this year.

More than likely if you order today you will not get the car by your lease end date. Unless you order a less popular design or someone doesn’t pick up their order. I ordered mine July 29th and still haven’t received my VIN. My delivery specialist said mine was the most popular option. My current lease is up in November.

Sure why not. It's so close anyway. But nothing will change for the Model 3 in terms of batteries.

More likely they are getting rid of the SR...

Nothing. People are dreaming that on battery day anything built on that day and after would be super better

Personally, I’d wait until after Battery Day AND until after they start shipping the 3 with a heat pump.

Waiting until Battery Day is easy, since it’s less than a week away. As far as the heat pump goes, there are rumors and indications (frunk liner) that it is close.

What I don't understand is, why did Tesla start producing a redesigned frunk without the heat pump? Why not produce a redesigned with a heat pump?
