Waking car up with smartphone

Does anybody know if a wifi connection is used when you need to wake up your car with your smartphone. It doesn't work on mine but it is ONLY connected by wifi, not cell.

If the car has working WiFi and VPN to Tesla, it's used, if not the VPN is over cellular network. Regardless of activity.

Mmmmm, in that case I better make a call to Tesla because I need to wake up the car 'manually' before I can connect to it.
