Is this safe to use with the standard off-the-shelf (hardwired) HPWC?

GE 4 ft. 3-Prong 40 Amp Electric Range Cord-WX09X10006DS - The Home Depot

This product has two issues:
  1. The plug is NEMA 10-50 and not NEMA 14-50. This is an older standard with no ground that shouldn't be installed today.
  2. The cable is rated for 40A, so you will be able to charge at only 32A, just like the Gen 2 UMC.
What you really need is a 50A NEMA 14-50 cable, like the link below.

You can also buy a 14-50 plug and set up your own cable. That is what I did.

I like the plug option since I have excess 6/3 cable at home already.

Thanks!

Yes, if connected to a properly wired receptacle (two hots and earth/ground).

These were wired with two hots and the ground (no neutral) and that is what the HPWC requires so it is safe and kosher.

What you really need is a 50A NEMA 14-50 cable, like the link below.

If starting from scratch by all means install a 14-50R, buy a 50A 14-50P cord set and set the HPWC for a 50 A breaker which results in it telling the car it can have 40A. But if you have an old style dryer or range outlet behind a 40A breaker and don't want to pull new wire and install a new outlet then this cable/plug is OK but you must dial the HPWC back to the 40 A setting which only allows 32 A charging.

I have a cord like the Ceptics 1.5 FT 50-Amp Extension Power Cord (like the one mentioned above from Amazon), it has a green, black, red, and white wire. According to the Tesla Wall Charger instructions, it says to hook up the green, red, and black to the charger. What do I do about the white? Just cap it off?
