A recent video released by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection gives us a good look at the construction of Tesla’s solar shingles.

Fire training instructor Brock Archer narrates the video and offers a few details on the shingles:



The panels are made up of photovoltaic cells mounted on top of a firestone clad guard, which creates a thin barrier of moisture.

Wiring is hidden underneath the tiles.

A single Solar Roof tile appears as three shingles on the roof.

Up to four tiles can be wired together to create branches, then wired to a diode trunk harness that carries the electricity across the roof.



Archer also notes that there is almost zero risk of shock or electrocution when cutting through the tiles.
