Blog Watch the Model 3 Assembly Line in Action at Giga Shanghai

A new video of Giga Shanghai gives us the best look yet at an assembly process that leverages hundreds of robots to build the Model 3.

The video shows images from the entire process – from the body panels being stamped and welded, to interior installation, to paint. It’s incredible to see the automation involved in Tesla’s manufacturing.

The factory in China took form with incredible speed. An empty field became a massive automotive plant in about year. Now, Tesla is reportedly hitting a production capacity of 3,000 cars per week and tracking well toward Tesla’s hopes for the first year of production.

Check out the video above.

Damn, the ground breaking was on Jan 7, 2019 with first Model 3 productions in late Dec 2019. Has there ever been such a fast turn around in car manufacturing? Amazing that there has been so little US side press on this.
'Dats because China has a totally different philosophy in many areas of industry. Unless you're living in a bubble, there's a reason why Tesla China went up quickly compared to Frermont, California. And unless you look deeply into China's construction practices in comparison to the rest of the world, you may miss hidden facts China isn't revealing to the public outside China........

Elon,
Why do the Chinese Tesla body panel alignment / gaps look perfect ? Can you please sell me a Chinese M3 ?
Better, please send some of the assembly line workers over from China, and have them show the Fremont workers how to put together M3 and MY properly.

Is the Model 3 assembly line in Shanghai more highly automated than the one in Fremont? I know Fremont had to fallback to more manual efforts after issues with "flubberbot" and some other initially automated processes. Did they perhaps resolve some of these automation issues by the time Shanghai went into production?

This is an example why Steve Jobs shifting manufacturing to China . Steve complained that he one of the reason was he unable to get sufficient production engineers to support production lines, hard to get assembly line workers and there were too many regulations and approval to get the plants up and running. China has a large reserve of willing migrant workers to work for a short period with long hours to save money and return to their village. This keeps the workers relatively happy and keeps costs down.

You also have to remember one more thing, Tesla’s initial production run In CA with heavy robotics had too many kinks. He had to abandon most of them. It looks like it was almost ironed out by this second implementation.
