Are you trading in and, if so, will that affect it?Already been waiting 3 weeks for a new VIN, and zero communication from the delivery advisor.
Can you post the full VIN so it can be tracked.
To see what eventually becomes of it?
I would like to do the factory tour someday. It does amaze me watching robots build vehicles, including the paint job..one would think that with so much automation due to the robots, if anything, any quirks or blemishes should be replicated throughout future production but that doesn’t appear to be the case. And this should be easily remedied for future production as well. Don’t get me wrong, i’m Sure it happens with every other car manufacturer too.
It was good they caught it in the pre delivery inspection and pointed it out to you, instead of waiting till you got home and noticed it...

Did you get free dinner?
Doesn’t exactly sound fair to the future owner. If the use a new bumper cover and repair it will be good as new. Not sure I’d want my VIN google-able. As bad as a carfax.

I refused our first M3D because of shipping damage. That was on a Saturday and I had a new VIN by the next Wednesday. So I was all set to pick up my M3D yesterday.
First I got a call in the morning that the car failed a technical inspection and a part may need to be ordered so my delivery was cancelled for the day. Which was extremely disappointing.
Upon asking for clarification, I was told they updated the car in the morning with the lastest firmware and apparently it freaked out and they thought the MCU chip was bad and they will have to order a new one.
My original delivery was scheduled for 4 pm. At about 2 pm I get a phone call from the service center that they decided to do a full software reinstall and apparently it resolved the issue. I was told they could have the car ready at 5:30 pm if I wanted to pick it up today still. The problem is I am nearly 3 hours from the service center. I wanted my car now so I grabbed the wife and kids and rushed out the door to get there in time. We hit some traffic so actually got there about 5:45 pm.
Once we arrived the guy in the showroom said he would notify our delivery specialist that we have arrived. So while we waited, the family checked out the cars in the showroom. Kids loved the X; I finally sat in a Model 3 for the first time. This took about 30 minutes or so. I did not hear a word yet. We decided to sit down and wait. Shortly after sitting my delivery specialist came up and said that upon final detail they noticed a paint issue on the front bumper that they were going to buff out. She said it should take about a half and wanted to confirm that we wanted to wait. Of course I said yes.
So by this time it was about 6:30 pm and the kids were getting hungry. We told the delivery specialist that we were going to walk to the fast food place across the street to get some dinner. We got back to the service center a little after 7 and was told they are still working on it.
About 7:30 the service center manager came out (Really nice guy) and said that they identified a “texture” issue on the front bumper. They have been buffing it for an hour and it really hasn’t improved. He wanted to show me the issue and get feedback from me and discuss options.
Basically, it looked like the bumper wasn’t clean before they clear coated it. It had bumps you could physically feel and caused the light to refract differently. It was obvious buffing wasn’t going to fix it as it was below the clear coat.
I was given the option of accepting it as is, have Tesla work with a local body shop to fix the issue which would most likely include repainting the front quarter of the car, or get a new vin. I decided I couldn’t live with accepting the car as is or having a brand new car repainted. So I reluctantly opted for a new vin knowing I would not receive my car for a while longer.
We left to go home about 8:30 pm empty handed and very disappointed. Service manager said it will take about 3 weeks for redelivery which doesn’t sound horrible considering is was going to be 1-2 weeks to have a body shop repair it.
For those who have refused cars, how long has it taken for the second delivery?
Once again the service center did and excellent job. I just wish they would had seen it before we drove their. The car should had not made it out of Fremont.

Vin was 68xxx. The rest of the car looked perfect.
Thanks for the info. This is what I was told as well. I should receive new VIN in about 3-days. If I don't receive one within a week, I was told to reach out and have them check on the status. Hopefully, I follow the "typical" path and don't get lost in the blackhole.
My VIN is also 68XXX. Did you by any chance take a photo of the issue with the front bumper?
My delivery date has been delayed twice. First because the delivery truck got a flat and didn't arrive to the service center in time for the first date. Then second because "a little damage to the front bumper" was found on inspection after arrival. The service center blames the damage on when the truck got the flat. My car is currently in service with no ETA for re-scheduling delivery. There are no details regarding what they're actually doing to the bumper. I'll be sure to look for this paint issue whenever I take delivery.
3 days seems more likely than the original 3-weeks. My friend also refused the VIN because it came when he was about to go on a 3 weeks vacation. His IDA told him that it was no problem, but when he got back from vacation (next week), they will need to "re-match" him to another car which they said would take about 1 week.
You rejected it because they wanted to put new paint on a new car?So I was all set to pick up my M3D yesterday.

It is surprising. Probably a contaminant issue with the bumper cover.
A repainted section on a car will never age the same as the factory applied finish. They are different materials and they are cured in different ways. It will look fine for several years, but if you plan on keeping it for a long time, you will see the repair later on. Also, it's never recommended to put paint protection film on repainted surfaces since there is a great chance that it will peel off the repaired paint. You rejected it because they wanted to put new paint on a new car?

probably some coating that is coming on the plastic panel that isn’t getting properly cleaned/removed. Prepping plastic is different from metal.Contamination from building cars in the tent and the air particles flying all over the place? And they don’t clean it before taking it to the paint shop?

Yes...thought I made that clear in the OP.
I think he was implying that was somehow not a good decision. It was a good decision. Your paint would never be perfectly matched, and most body shops don't have the equipment to replicate a factory paint job.
