Western Canada Superchargers

Sorry I missed this.

You can get to all the destinations, but it's not enough for a return trip. A charger at the Tofino/Uclulet Junction or in Campbell River would allow the charge needed to get home. Right now that entire return trip has to be planned around leaving fairly directly from a longer charge session.

Tourists might like that so they can head down island after a bonus morning of additional sightseeing. I personally have the option to use my vehicle for work. I can't do that up island because I am doing too much driving trying to get full days in. The system works for tourists with some flexibility and planning, but is a barrier to wider adoption. That's why I think a few smaller chargers would be all that's needed.

It's the same in the Kootenays. As it stands you can almost get to anywhere. But if you want to explore the Kootenays or use fast charging for the home trip it's trickier. I think that's part of what's driving the big charging expansion there.

Edit relevant to some of the other recent posts:

From the City of Vancouver's charging bylaw announcement today (emphasis mine):

12-17% means 1 in 8 or better. Even if just half are Tesla that's 1 in 16! Sure there are lots of old cars on the road but it speaks to how it seems driving around here seeing them constantly. Very cool.
We just need to convince BC Hydro to add a Tesla Supercharger connector to their fast chargers. The largest public charging company in the USA is already doing this.

Man Tofino and Campbell river just need Urban Superchargers at most as you’re going to spend more than an hour out there. Those are beautiful places. I know tofino has destination chargers down by the marina but then you’re looking at 3-4 hours of staying out there to charge in a SR, which could be an inconvenience

Seems like all your problems would be temporarily solved if this was at the BC Hydro stations.

That's pretty cool!

I wish the BC Hydro stations were higher power. Even though I'm not using them I want that supercharger-style speed for all EV owners. The more EVs on the road, the more pressure developers, malls, businesses, etc. will feel to install or host chargers (free or not).

Any words from South Surrey supercharger? Supposed to be open in Q3 but apperantly it is delayed.

I know someone who knows where it is, I believe from a construction permit, but he won't tell me where

@MarcoRP sworn to secrecy? :(

@cimci yeah still waiting too. If it's anywhere near the placeholder on the map, it will be rather convenient for me lol. But it's been delayed a few times already (was originally listed to be in White Rock and then moved late last year to S.Surrey). I'd take the timeline with a grain of salt.

This is not news for most BC Tesla owners but the number of Supercharge locations in BC has been growing dramatically in 2021. At the end of 2020 there were 17 open sites. Five new sites have opened so far this year. Five more in various stages of construction. There are 11 other sites on the Tesla "Find Us" map with potential 2021 completion dates. It is possible that the number of sites could double just in 2021, as compared to 2020. (In comparison, it took seven years to get to 17 sites and no more than 4 sites have opened in any calendar year prior to 2021.)

It really is a virtuous cycle. More EVs means more infrastructure and more infrastructure opens the EV market to more drivers. This is a good spot to be! The government reported in the spring that we have the highest uptake rate for zero emission vehicles. This is a big part of that.

With Prince George and Jasper, chances for Blue River and McBride? Definitely routes that I’ve pondered, but not even remotely planned for in my 2015 S70D.

One of the unknowns for BC Superchargers is the opening of the Canada-US border for non-essential vehicle traffic. That could put further pressure on SC sites when American visitors resume their previous travel patterns (perhaps offset to some degree by BC Tesla owners heading south to US destinations). There could also be some pent up interest in the the Trans Canada Hwy SC's, many of which opened just before the pandemic limited many travel options.

Differences between US and Canada websites, will need to reconcile later.

Lots of new entries in BC.
