What’s causing my MY to stay awake/suspended?

Have had my MY for a couple of weeks. I finally got around to installing/configuring TeslaMate and noticed that my car doesn’t sleep and stays in the Online or Suspended state. How do I go about figuring out what’s causing this?

I'm using Teslamate on my MY and it has no issues falling asleep. 15 mins after inactivity, the car falls falls asleep (which can be seen in the "states" page)

On the other hand, I also installed Teslamate on a brand new Vision-only M3. It did not fall asleep after 15 mins of inactivity. The logs kept saying something along the lines of "Car still alive... falling asleep..." and it tries over and over every 30min. Something similar to this on the Teslamate FAQ.

Turns it, out was a Tesla software bug with the car itself! After installing the latest software update available for the car (2021.4.18.10), it now falls asleep every time after 15 mins.

Check the logs of the "teslamate/teslamate:latest" docker container. It should say something like this:
2021-07-06 17:34:36.083 car_id=1 [info] Suspending logging

(A followup to the post above)

If you do determine from the logs that it's not falling asleep, then a few troubleshooting suggestions:
1) Double check Sentry Mode is off.
2) Double check Cabin Overheat Protection is off
3) Verify latest Tesla software updates are installed.
4) Try un-pairing all phones from Bluetooth key. This one shouldn't matter (doesn't stop the car from sleeping), but it's worth trying out.

Hopefully you'll get your car sleeping again soon! :)

Once you do get it falling asleep again, get into the habit of using Teslamate to check your battery % / miles / other stats while at home. Don't open the Tesla app on the phone as it causes the car to wake up, and then fall asleep after 15 mins. The "overview" page has many of the useful info in one glance, and that's the page I have bookmarked.

If you're careful, you can even setup firewall rules on your home router to be able to access Teslamate UI even away from home. But take care you do it properly to avoid security/privacy risks. I do this, so that I can use Teslamate even away from home! So I almost never open the Tesla app for anything (e.g. let the car sleep as much as possible).

Under the Tesla Model Y Security Settings set Sentry Mode to Exclude your home location*.

If you purchased Full Self Driving (FSD) turn off Summon/Smart Summon when the Tesla Model Y is parked at your home location.

* Set the Home Location in the Tesla Navigation system.
I would second this.
Sentry mode could be the issue.
Keep in mind if you are parking outside, I would recommend keeping sentry mode on. You never can tell what is out there at night.
If you find Teslamate to be the issue, I would recommend Teslafi. It's easy to set up sleep and deep sleep locations and at a glance you can see where it stops checking for car data.

I'm surprised the car doesn't have an auto shift-to-Park after opening the door! (or after X mins of inactivity).
Many other EVs I've driven has this feature for safety to prevent vehicle roll-away. And to prevent the vehicle from self-discharging to dead by being left on.

Anyway, I'm glad you figured it out. Enjoy Teslamate, the stats are amazing!

I did that once. When I opened the driver door on my MY, I got a message on the screen that basically implied “hey dummy, you didn’t put the vehicle in park, so the vehicle automatically did this for you”. That was enough of a reminder for me that I haven’t done so since.

Same problem here. Programmed a script on a Raspberry PI to run at startup and send a message via UDP every minute. Connected it to USB-C of Jeda USB hub. Using packetsender app on laptop as UDP server to receive the messages. Getting them every minute like clockwork, never going to sleep. I've done a hard reboot, turned off summon and sentry. No idea how to disable smart summon, I only see summon mode and standby mode in summon mode if that is it. I never use summon mode anyway so just disabled it for now. No TeslaFi or TeslaMate. I do have Stats IOS app so perhaps that is it. I just turned off background data for stats and let's see. Otherwise it must be that bug that was mentioned above. No software updates for me yet, stuck on 2021.4.18.3

I would start with checking sentry mode (as others have said)...

1) Make sure you have set the "Home" address (to your home)
2) Then set Sentry mode to Exclude Home in the settings

When sentry is disabled the car will go into deep sleep. Otherwise it will remain in standby the whole time (and consume significantly more battery power overnight if not plugged in).

You’re not gonna believe this. My wife wasn’t outing the car in park after driving. She was just stopping it a walking away. 🤦‍♂️
Strange, anytime I open the door without putting the car in park I get the "Hey dummy.." notice Daddyscar mentioned and it puts it in park automatically, wonder why yours doesn't? Might want to check with TS on that....
