I was planning to place an order and select February for delivery - the Sales Advisor suggested March to be safe.

What do you guys think? I'd rather not extend the pain of an additional month wait, but don't want to risk it either.

I would think that they would just be late and push your date out. I would order for the earliest delivery they have available when you lock in your order. Remember that you have two weeks to confirm and finalize the order and that could push you back. So if you know exactly what you want and are confident that you will not change the order, you could confirm immediately. I was pushed back 2.5 weeks, which I didn't think was that bad.

Why does it matter? Model years are so last century. You would really deny yourself the pleasure of a Model S for a month or two so you could have a different year printed on the registration form? Improvements to the car happen when they happen, nothing to do with what model year is listed.

I am wondering why sales person told the OP to be safe to select March?

i wonder also. I did tell him I was hoping to capture any incremental improvements. His exact response was:

"As far as getting a 2016 VIN, I would recommend a March delivery date to be safe. The vehicles usually take anywhere from 6-8 weeks to be produced."

Now maybe he is working backwards from an 8 week production? That sounds long though -

My suspicion would be possibility of new features (ventilated seats etc) to be introduced in early 2016 and that's why he said that?

Sometimes or most of the times even the sales team has no idea of when these features are going to be introduced.

The model year of the Model S shown on the registration has never had anything to do with capturing any incremental improvements,as you will read here in hundreds of posts in many threads about it. Improvements happen when they happen, nothing is held back for the next "model year" because there are no model years.

When I ordered the car, I had the same desire. My Delivery Specialist put a note on my order for it to be a 2016 model year as soon as available (i.e., no need to guess what month 2016s will come out). My car is estimated for late January to mid February delivery.

Thanks Sparktz - what delivery month did you select in the drop-down when placing the reservation?

I selected February, then my DS changed it to 2016 model year as soon as available upon request in the one week waiting period.

I ordered in September and told my rep I wanted a 2016. He made a note on my order and now I have been notified that mine is scheduled to be made the week of January 4, 2016, with a late Jan/early Feb delivery. The car will be identical to a 2015, but if I sell it in 2 or 3 years, I'm sure it will be worth a little more. Not everyone thinks like Tesla people - that the only thing that effects price is model and mileage.
