The humorous thing is as other automakers began to jump on board the EV train I think they will find one of the most readily available and even most cost effective sources for batteries to be:
The Tesla Gigafactory(ies)!
That is, assuming Tesla cannot outproduce their own demand, which I have a hunch is exactly what Elon has been planning for a long time now. It's just been so long that we've seen an American company (at least an auto one) play the long game beyond the next quarter's profit it won't be apparent what's going on until it's already happened. Plus, why dump millions into battery research and design when Tesla is doing it for you and producing them at a price point it would be hard to compete with in-house!
