What does a referral code do for the buyer and the person providing the referral code?

Noob Tesla (almost) owner here. My apologies to the folks who already know this (I didn't):

In order to take advantage of the referral code (now 5,000 miles for new buyer and source of referral code, valid until 5/28), you *MUST* use the link given to you by the other person to start your order. If you start an order some other way, it won't work.

I did not understand this when I started my order, and thought that link was to be used once the order was complete. I ordered my car through the website thinking that I'd have an opportunity to put the referral code in there somewhere...nope. (Just about every other purchase I made on the internet gives you an opportunity to apply a discount code at check out--that is NOT the case with a Tesla referral code.)

After my purchase was done and while waiting for my car, I contacted my "local" (115 miles away) Tesla showroom to ask about how the code works. I was told--sorry, you can't use the code after you made your order. I pleaded my case and even considered cancelling my order, just so I could start over using the code...but Tesla raised the price of FSD by $1,000, so if I cancel and start over, I'd have to pay the higher price. Not an option.

So--If you haven't started your order yet, my fellow Noobs should know that step 1 is "click on the referral code." I didn't know that. I figure that 5,000 miles has a value of around (arguably) $325 (not to mention the chances to win a Model Y or a 2020 Roadster (I think)). I know that compared to a $65,000 car, $325 is small potatoes, but I expected Tesla to realize my mistake and just give my buddy (who gave me the referral code) a bump. Sure I'd like the 5,000 miles, too, but c'mon...really? You make self-driving cars with robots and we can't figure this out?

I'm sure there is someone at Tesla who (with a few clicks) can see my blunder and hook up my friend (who I credit with "selling" me the car much more than the Tesla salesperson did.)

OK, venting done. I hope I saved someone from making the same mistake I made.

I'd say "if you are going to start an order, contact me and I'll give you my code" but that doesn't help my friend. If you sympathize with me then contact me, and I'll give you his code. How's that for selflessness?

A Tesla sales rep can definitely add the code after the order is placed. You just need to find someone who is willing to do it. A friend of mine placed an order for an SR a few weeks ago without the order code. When we went to take delivery of it this week I insisted they add the code before we would accept delivery. Then after they said they added it I made them write an email and send it to me confirming that we would be eligible to both receive the 5,000 bonus referral miles after delivery. It was signed by the delivery center manager.

If you don’t like the answer you get from a Tesla rep, just find another one.

Exact same boat. Talk to your rep, and tell them you will just cancel the order, and start over using the referral code. They should be able to find a way to fix it, then. I was told it could delay things by a couple of weeks, but that doesn't appear to be the case as things continue to progress. Maybe it would have had they matched me to a car, but for a build, they can do it. At least I hope.

There are definitely some things Tesla needs to fix in this whole ordering process. They also initially told me I had to pick up mine at a dealer, even though I"m more than 160 miles away from the closest. Original delivery guy told me it was 250 miles. I showed him the link on the site saying 160, and indicated I had a verbal confirmation from a salesperson. They eventually got that sorted, too, but I told him it would likely be August before I could get to a dealer to take delivery.

Thanks for your reply--
I considered that option right after I realized that it didn't work right...except the price of FSD went up by $1,000, so I'd have to pay that extra cash if I were to cancel and start over.

In another thread I explained that I gave the code I wanted to use to my Tesla rep, and she applied it in the next in-store purchase. So my buddy will get his 5k miles (and so will a complete stranger). That leaves me without any benefit...other than hooking up a friend. I guess I'm OK with that, but I'd sure like to have my 5K, too. Oh well....

Wow--I'm 115 miles away from my dealership, and I thought I was far. I plan on taking a train from Norfolk VA to Richmond VA on my pickup day, so I don't have to put my wife through all that driving. Hah! I'm going to take a train to go pick up my Tesla...how weird is that?

I didn’t have my referral use a link and I got my miles...

He gave my code to the sales advisor who put it in during ordering.

Also the 6 month expiration window is stupid. Even referring one person and using all 5K miles would be hard. Imagine trying to use 10K+ Supercharger miles in 6 months hahaha

Has anyone who has received the 5,000 mile referral bonus seen an expiration date noted anywhere on their account? The website still shows pay per use on my account although in my loot box I see that I have 5,000 miles remaining with no reference to when they expire.

I ordered mine 2 days before the 5000 bonus. My Delivery Specialist said I should be able to get it. However If it is 5000 for 6 month or 1000 for a year (is that the original offer???) then I would be better off with the 1000 for a year. Wish we know for sure what the deal is.

I know posting referral code on the main thread in the Tesla, Inc forum is the only place where its generally accepted om TMC...

Has anyone had any success in posting their code there and having someone use it? I tried but no bites so far.

Why would someone use a complete stranger’s code? This is a forum of people who either own Teslas or are at least enthusiasts. It would be very rare for someone to not already know someone that has a code that they would like to help out.
