Can someone tell me what is this item for? Came in the frunk with my tow hitch in the lunch box.

Tow hook. It screws into the frame and would be the location a winch would attach to in order to drag your car on to a flat bed or out of a ditch etc. Hopefully you'll never have the need for one.

Why isn't there a storage bag or location to put it, so it isn't a heavy projectile in case of an accident. Picked up the car, and they found it loose in the truck, floating around without any purpose....

I believe there is a slot with the Mobile Charger (UMC) bag where it is supposed to be stored.

Where does it attach?

Bjorn (Youtube fame) has a video about it. With the pre-refresh Model S, you pop off the nose cone and there's some place that it is suppose to attach. Don't know about refreshed Ss or Xs

It's not that elusive. One just needs to read the owner's manual:

Ah. That explains it. The screenshot above is from the 10/20/16 Owner's Manual. Let me know if you need a copy.

It's not that elusive. One just needs to read the owner's manual:

Aaannnddd, it's on page 182 in the copy of the manual I have dated 11/7/2016.

Just double click on the section in the Contents titled "Instructions for Transporters".
