What is this space for...opposite the subwoofer

Hi there, I have had my MX for over a year and I am perplexed by the plastic insert and void above it on the drivers' side rear hatch area. The sub woofer is on the passenger side so no connection to that. Only thing I can think of is some sort of bag dispenser but the plastic seems too loose for that.....any ideas?

Not 100% sure where you are talking, though. Pics would help.

You've probably discovered the inlet for the rear AC intake. Turn the rear AC on high and you can feel the air being pulled in there.
