What is this thing??

I found a object I can't identify wedged behind the passenger seat of my Roadster. It seems to be a couple of plastic boards covered with felt, and one has an elastic band around it. The two were originally joined in a T-shape by a couple of tabs, now broken:

Here's roughly how they look when put together:

My intuition is that this might have been something that belonged in the trunk, but I really don't know. Can anybody identify it?

This was once posted to the 'official' Roadster forum:

Not a lot of help but there is a slot / box under the passenger seat for the car owner's manual.

No, he just bought it used.
I think it might be #1121

Yes, that's right.

I found the slot for the manual -- which is something I hadn't known about. It don't see how it could have anything to do with this piece, tho.

Hmm. Maybe it's something not related to the car, something the previous owner just stuffed back there and forgot about?

Since the passenger seat is immobile, anything placed behind it can be hard to get to and easily forgotten.

Another place for a cap is between the two seats, behind the seat backs against the back wall. The cap sits nicely on the "hump" and the seat backs hold it up (especially if a baseball type cap is folded).
