What to Expect When Placing Deposit?

All,

Wife borrowed my MS for a road trip this weekend and is now firmly sold on Tesla. So we will be placing a MX reservation deposit shortly. Could folks in the know kindly tell me what to expect after we do that? Will we be just added to a list without much information about what happens next (like the Ludicrous upgrade list I currently sit on), will we get to configure a car but have no idea when it might get built, etc. Just wondering.

Thanks.
Tim

My recent experience putting a fresh deposit down Jan 9th (for a car I do not intend to buy but that's another story): my invitation to configure came about two weeks after I placed my deposit. The configuration displays the same basic info that it did when I configured my long-held initial X reservation in December. That is, the design studio today still shows "early 2016" for P90D, "mid 2016" for 90D and "mid to late 2016" for 70D. Therefore conclude your experience would be the same as everyone else who has thus far configured: if you configure a P90D you will be assigned a delivery specialist and VIN sooner, if you order a different car you will not be assigned a VIN for sometime yet.

Another question for those in the know about MX reservations.

After one configures the car, when does the configuration "lock" in the sense that you have to pay the change fee to modify? Also when does the $5K become nonrefundable?

TIA

After you hit the "order" button you will get a warning dialog that explains this, after you click "OK" on the warning dialog, you have 1 week to make any changes you want to your config. After the seventh day your order is *confirmed* (you'll get e-mails reminding you it's gonna happen, then you'll get an e-mail that your order has confirmed. Once confirmed your deposit is not refundable and any changes cost $500

Ok. Same as the MS process. Seems a tad annoying that it is locked but could be in the queue for months and months. I guess I'll wait until we hear the news on 100D before ordering.

@PVogel. I was going to cancel an order and buy a founders car from another forum user. I asked Tesla about getting the deposit back. They said I could get it back just so my car had not gone into production. Ended up my car was already through production so it didn't apply and I kept my original reservation. I sent an email to another forum user who canceled their order to see if they got their deposit back. I will let you know what they say.

Yeah, I was explaining the "official" policy. After confirmation they don't need to give you your money back and given the unpredictability of the production queue you can't count on when after confirmation it will go into production so best to assume you aren't getting your money back after it confirms.
