When do you think Powerwall Gen 3 comes out?

It feels like quite some time that Tesla has updated their powerwalls. I haven’t seen any rumors into when they would possibly be updated. I recall seeing that Panasonic was increasing battery density in the 2170’s over the next few years. I also wonder if the 4680’s will play a roll in future powerwalls. Anyone have any guesses in Tesla’s future plans for powerwall?

Rumor is that Panasonic is no longer supplying cells for the Tesla storage products. Tesla is importing them all from other suppliers. (Samsung, LG, etc.)

They discussed some points on the Battery Day presentation in the Fall. Check youtube for the videos from the presentation.

I have 2 Powerwalls, and I must admit 27 kWh isn't as much as I thought it would be. It works fine as long as there is no A/C use or cloudy skies, but I think doubling or better yet tripling the capacity of a Powerwall would be really useful. This is why I wish Tesla cars could feed back into your house, it would be such a perfect solution as I have 2 Teslas and they could power my house in an outage for many days.

Yep, have heard this from many. But I spent how much and basically can just run my lights and refrig. I know many who paid for a battery and have now installed a generator.

I love this forum. Has allowed me to see so many different angles to the "energy" issue, but from cost and what to do when we lose it.
This is a topic that one basically cannot ask but what are the pro and cons of various options to this questions, and the costs of each. Everyone lose to defend what they have done. But that is life. Have you run numbers of the cost of more batteries, vs a generator, etc. Just wondering.

In the event of a major earthquake, natural gas lines are shut off, and can remain that way for some time. This is the major reason we chose powerwalls instead of a gas generator, even though they were more expensive (even after SGIP / ITC).

Now, can one have a generator that runs on natural gas or propane? If so, one could have some propane ready. I have my own 500 gallon propane tank since no natural gas where I live. And being in the foothills, odds of an earthquake are pretty low also.

Yep, one can always come up with a set of assumptions to justify anything. This is why I am hoping to end up with all the options, will be ready for anything.

I have given up that PW3 will happen anytime in the near future. Just trying to get PW2's are not easy

Yes, you can have a propane generator. Not an option for most of us, as city codes in many areas do not allow anything bigger than the tiny tanks.

How much solar do you have, and what do you do to shift your load to daytime?

I’m just trying to plan out for myself; I expect to add 4kW of solar to an existing 8kW system, along with 2 PW’s. My average daily use is 35kWh, and of that ~8kWh is for car charging that can be done during the day generally at a 2kW rate. Our air conditioning is split systems, and we would only need to run one in an outage.

Agreed. That is why we have Powerwalls. They work and even the city inspector and fire department crews that have come by think they are cool. One FD chief was going to get a system for his house.
Since if I can get PW's, they turn out to not be free, and add another level of complexity I really logically cannot justify, I told the wife but it would be cool also. Stupid way to spend money. (

Do you live in a high-risk fire zone (zone 2 or 3)? Do you have a "medical condition"?

If yes to both of these, look HARD into a PW installer (not Tesla directly) that can help you through the SGIP process.

You already have the redundancy via a generator, so yeah not a lot of real need. But I agree cool. :->
