It varies, but usually sometime when your car is nearly completion of production.
Pretty sure in CA (at least), you have 30 days to notify your insurance company after taking possession. Tesla (under CA law) has to see proof of insurance in your name, but it doesn't need to be for the new car, just a car you own.
This is how i did it. Had my VIN assigned shortly before delivery (4 days) and then updated my Insurance online, but i had already sent Tesla insurance documents for a different vehicle i had and it was fine.
That's good to know. I also put my order in 9 days ago and no correspondence since, so I've been wondering about how receiving a VIN relates to delivery date.
@kbecks13, was all your correspondence for your M3 delivery by email or did you ever talk to a delivery specialist like we have for the MS/MX?
I did not have a ton of correspondence for my delivery and it was mostly over the phone followed up with a quick email. I believe my first phone conversation was after i had my VIN assigned and i set up a delivery date after that. Also keep in mind i'm in CA so the lead time between VIN assignment and delivery might be higher if you're on the East Coast (since VIN assignment is likely after finishing Production in Fremont)
Got a phone call yesterday afternoon from a delivery specialist in Las Vegas to schedule delivery for our local (Rockville MD) service center. We're on their schedule to take delivery Thursday the 25th. So that would be 3 weeks from the initial invite.
So my experience is consistent with yours, @kbecks13, including the longer ship time (of course) to the East coast.
