When you get a VIN...

Does it mean the car is in the lot in freemont? Does it mean it exists and is real and is "done"? Someone else posted it takes about a month after Vin to get a car, but I've heard a week from some people.. but I am east coast so maybe it takes that long to make it across the country? I can't imagine them paying someone to take a week to drive it that far.

I don't think anyone know for sure. My impression is that when a VIN is provided to the reservation holder that the car has been built. The time from configuration to VIN is typically much longer than from VIN to delivery, at least it was prior to the recent mass pushback of delivery dates.

My theory is that a VIN assignment means it’s now in the queue to be built. Like a factory order requisition.

Up to a week ago, Tesla was assigning VINs once the car passed QC, however, they have now changed their VIN assignments.

Tesla will now give you your VIN one week before delivery (if you change delivery date, the VIN will disappear and reappear at the one week mark).

In theory, the VIN is still assigned to your account prior to being revealed to you (as identified using the HPWC hack).

Way back in my day (2 months ago lol) it could be less than a week from VIN to delivery, suggesting the car was already built and just needed to be shipped. There were cases of people getting their VIN only a day or two before the first available delivery date. I have no idea what's happening right now with the new configuration options, increased Canada deliveries, and an apparent attempt to push off the 200,000th delivery to the next quarter.

From getting my VIN about a month ago...
I get VIN, I get email from loan specialist, answer some questions and get final approval
The next day the delivery specialists sends email confirming delivery slot and says that car is currently in Fremont and will have to be shipped. So yes, VIN seemed to indicate car has been built and assigned to me.

But it's a month after those email that my delivery appointment is assigned. (The car has to be shipped via train and/or truck to east coast)

And then last week my VIN disappeared along with everyone else's.

I would say that moving VIN assignment later in the game makes it easier to manage any issues. If a car falls off truck, then the next match can be assigned instead of having to go back into queue again and waiting another month.

So i spoke to my ISA and he confirmed that about a week or so ago Tesla changed their policy. They will show your VIN on your account when you are within seven days of your delivery date. My delivery date was June 4th and they called to see if i could pick up next Tuesday. Unfortunately I’m out if town until June 1st. I’m now scheduled to pick it up June 1st. I’ll check tomorrow to confirm I see the VIN on my account.

Yeah I can confirm this is true. My delivery is next Thursday (5/31) and as of last night, my VIN showed up again.
