Since ordering my Model 3 in January, I’ve been blown away by how helpful and entertaining this community has been.

If you’re a certain type of forum-friendly, potentially slightly tech user, trawling this site is great. But not everyone gets the same kick out of digging through all the info to find the most useful bits for them.

That’s why I’ve put togetherWheresMyTesla.com — a nice simple site for normal people expecting their first Tesla.

The core of the site is a simple checklist of what to do while waiting for your car, matched with the “Shipping Forecast”, which features the latest info from Mr.Miserable on Models 3 shipments to the UK.

It’s a little side project, so a bit rough around the edges here and there, but we’d love your support. And of course, we’ll be encouraging people to join in this community once they have their car.

Give it a look at Welcome to WheresMyTesla - WheresMyTesla.com or share with anyone who wants a simple lowdown, and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

If you’re genuinely trying to be helpful and not just make money on referrals suggest add a few things.

Charging: OLEV Grants, TWC, scheduled charging.

Insurance: No mention of LV??

Teslacam: You might want to think about how responsible advocating cheap 32GB drives is! Doomed for failure.

Thanks NewbieT — I’m trying to strike a balance between covering the important core elements and not getting too in the weeds. Think tabloid rather than broadsheet (I don’t want to replace all the great info on this site, so happy for them to “progress” here.)

For example: the OLEV grant, does that happen relatively transparency once you talk with an installer about putting in a charger?

Is LV referring to the tracker situation there?

On TeslaCam, I’ve updated many recommendation after buying a £20 little 128 gig Samsung number. I know there are upsides to SSDs, SD cards etc but is it really 10x better? Again, if is more “the weeds”, then I don’t want to overcomplicate.\

P.S. My belief is always that you lead with being genuinely useful and helpful and the rest will follow!

Do the numbers yourself. The key facts are there for most solutions. Its not alchemy, its simple maths based upon manufacturers published specs, TeslaCam requirements and individual usage patterns. And a bit experience from others knowing what the weak points are.

Looks like its just rehashing info sourced from other places interspersed with referral links rather than original information.

ie checklist item #1 - signup to octopus go and surprise surprise, a big referral link.

No mention of other options then?

Thanks for checking in Vanilla Air — you have to remember: the whole point of this site is not to tell someone like you anything you don’t already know, it’s to put the main checklist of things to do in the simplest possible form for “normals”. There’s no need for me to replace what this forum does amazingly or cater directly to this audience, it’s done so well here!

Re. Storage, my updated recommendation is almost exactly what is in the Tesla Owners Manual — will probably highlight that fact in updated draft.

Is there a simpler and more relevant first step than moving to Octopus Go for most people? The assumption is, for maybe 80% that’s probably the only thing they need to know. (And then for the diehards, you’re likely to do your own research and not need the site.)

Again, thanks for taking a look and for your feedback. I hope you can see what we’re trying to achieve, and appreciate that we don’t want to replace these amazing forums, just make the most useful information more easily available for a more diverse audience.

There are two main insurers that will insure Tesla’s at a reasonable price Directline and LV. Yes there are others but these are the main two. Not many people take out insurance with just one quote (renewals excepted). I think you should include them both if you’re trying to be helpful.

.

There was a discussion on the the TeslaMotors reddit recently where many owners from the US had reported bad experience with the "Tesla Recommended" sticks, and most people were advocating high endurance SD cards. I guess it's a trade off between saving a couple of quid and one day (quite possibly when you really need it) finding out that your USB stick has crapped the bed and you can't get the videos.

I tried to get away from naming specific insurers — instead emphasising that you want to make sure they know it has a tracker, dashcam etc. On the phone to Direct Line, found they had a special tick box for Autopilot alone that saved me £50 (!)

Re. Dashcam storage, I’ve gone with the Wirecutter’s recommended pick, matching the form factor of the Tesla pick. I can see how SD + case could be better but I do think most people will get by find on a simpler setup. And simple simple simple is the priority. If they want more detail, that’s what places like this forum are so great for.

Thanks for everyone who has had a look so far. Appreciate every question and bit of feedback and hoping it might become a simple useful resource that’s easy to remember and recommend where relevant.

Hats off for giving it a go and showing some initiative in getting referrals.

Well done.

Don't worry about telling 'experts' *cough what they already know - they're not the target (and they should know that)

Appreciate the encouragement. At the same time, I do understand it’s natural to compare to the forums and think it lacking... because it is by design!

This place does such a good job of what it’s for, the last thing I want to do is directly duplicate it.

Forums are mostly "I cannot be arsed to google or read so I'll ask (including cannot be arsed to search here)" on one side and people who are passionate about their subject on the other (whatever that may be, including googling)

I just called Direct Line for this Autopilot tick box and they were not aware of it? - do you have any more info for when you spoke to Direct Line?

We just renewed with Direct Line and I got them to look for the Autopilot saving. Again, nothing listed, no savings to be had.

Basically I just asked them if there were any factors regarding the Tesla that I hadn’t ticked in the online quote and she asked if I had autopilot, which resulted in £50 down. Maybe she was blagging it to close the deal... Said there wasn’t an option for dashcams directly, which was a shame.

I also received a Autopilot discount. She wasn’t sure at first but I continued to press the issue and asked if there were Tesla specialists that I could speak to which she confirmed there was. Didn’t need to speak to them in the end as she found the discount.

I would recommend trying again.

Did you get your insurance recently? I was speaking to someone who said that they were told that they take this into account when giving you a quote.

There are lots of sites doing this and frankly they can be more than a little frustrating

Here's another variation on the theme

Tesla Owners UK

You need origional content and yours has very little from what I can see

Thanks George -- regarding original content, that's where the Shipping Forecast is a great feature (as we approach the next season...)

However, equally I believe sometimes it's a matter of bringing just the simple useful facts to the forefront. About distilling down all the complexity and options into just the actions that a normal person could take to prepare.

And I hope the list is a good execution of that, which you'd think about sharing with a "normal" friend ordering a Tesla... Love to know if you think there's a simpler "checklist", or a simpler interface for the shipping updates out there.
