Wow, you're getting more in discounts than you're actually paying. Maybe I'll reach out to Allstate for a quote. I've never seen them as a competitively priced insurance company in Southern California. Mercury always seems to come up way less expensive for a company with similar Consumer Reports scores (and good personal experience), so I've never been able to leave them.

2012 Altima - 10,000 mi/yr (10mi/weekday for work)
2015 Model S - 8,000 mi/yr (pleasure only)

Are you on a lease? I don't see why you wouldn't drive your Tesla to work back and forth.

After one week with my new Tesla it sucks driving my 2013 Altima.

I've shared this information on a similar thread, Model S - Auto Insurance, but I thought I would provide my quotes for others here as well:

I'm getting the following quotes in Orange County for my Tesla S 60 on order:

  • $1,718/year: Ameriprise (Costco)
  • $1,758/year: Mercury Insurance
  • $2,021/year: Amica
  • $2,611/year: State Farm
  • $2,846/year: Allstate
All policies are for $100k/300k/100k, 100k/300k uninsured motorist (except Mercury is $50k/100k) $1,000 for both deductibles, $0-5,000 medical (depending on how much they charged for it), $75 roadside assistance, $30/$900 rental car. These are not tied to discounts that can be applied for combining with additional vehicles or homeowners insurance.

It would be great to put together a spreadsheet that allows us all to enter our quotes for comparison purposes. Something similar to the Model S Order & Delivery 2016 spreadsheet that allows users to add their quotes.

I discovered that I qualify for USAA membership. USAA came in the lowest, and because they are the highest rated insurance company by Consumer Reports, I went with them. Here's the final tally on quotes (per year):
  • $1,611/year: USAA (requires special qualification for membership)
  • $1,718/year: Ameriprise (Costco)
  • $1,758/year: Mercury Insurance
  • $2,021/year: Amica
  • $2,611/year: State Farm

I love USAA and have several things through them. However, with a pending Model S delivery approaching, I'm needing to setup insurance for it. My quote through USAA was a little higher. Perfect driving record and credit. My quote with USAA came in at around $1,800/year.That is also with multi-policy discounts and such. My current insurance is only $1,200 per year so this is a pretty good jump. I'm planning to shop around a bit and see if there's some better options out there.

The total for all four is $2,170 for 6 months.

Well, after 3 months, with no reasons given, Travelers cancelled my policy ($1,700 / year, I have an unblemished record for the past 10 years). So I tried all the ones listed here: Esurance.com (they now will not insure Teslas) , Ameriprise Auto (their premiums have gone up on Teslas), Progressive (not a bad quote), but the one that got me the best quote was ... GEICO!

With GEICO the whole process was online, from quote, to signing the papers electronically, with NO step to go to the Underwriters to approve the quote. They automatically found most of the discounts I qualify for. The whole process took no more than 30 minutes. Highly recommended.

Agreed!

About to take delivery on our P85.

I got a quote for Ameriprise and they gave me a rate of $1300/6mo for a P85 in Texas
Then they denied us outright because we had a comprehensive claim within the last 3 years!!! (someone hit our parked car) Crazy they would deny us for a not-at-fault comprehensive claim that caused less then $1000 in damage.

(Almost all the other quotes were 3-4k for 6mo, Geico was $2200 for 6mo)

Ended up going with State Farm at $1400/6mo $500/$500.

Apparently getting insurance in Texas sucks (just moved here).

I'll likely keep shopping but at least we have coverage for the time being. (P85 costs more $$$)
