When drive with other cars in the front and behind me, I keep noticing that other drivers don't follow me at normal distance.
They start out behind me at normal distance.
Then they keep their distance farther back.

I am thinking it has something to do with the regenerative braking.

    Either...
    1. Regen braking is not consistently turning on the brake lights and the drivers are being cautious.

    2. Regen braking is turning on the brake lights too frequently that the drivers stay farther back.

    Which is it?

    Or is it something else?

It's 2... It's Dann annoying driving behind a car that has the brakes lights come on and off repeatedly... Also, I think many are afraid of hitting the 'expensive car'... I do stay further behind a Lamborghini for that reason

If I wasn't a model 3 owner, I don't think I'd notice the model 3's on the road. They are quite plain looking cars.

I think you're imagining people staying further back.

Some people do not use a smooth throttle. If they frequently lift and then push the pedal it will constantly be flashing the brake lights.

G/F constantly does this with her gas car. On and off the throttle constantly.

I’m hoping they add a feature that allows you to visually see when brake lights are being applied.

Already exists, the car icon on the display reflects the status of the lights.

    something else - you're imagining it :)
I've had people so close that the ultrasonic sensors go off, especially in traffic.
Heavy traffic seems to make some folks lose all perspective and see one car length as a life or death situation.
My usual fix is dialing 7 on autopilot follow distance and tilting the rearview mirror to one side

Interesting, I never noticed. I’ll have to look at that tomorrow. Thanks!

It is so tiny I could not see it.
    I still cannot tell.
Tesla should make the brake light more visible on the screen.

Interestingly, on AP1, the car icon is huge and you can easily see the brake lights.

Not sure about Model 3, but in my X the brake light indicator in my Avatar is pretty easy to see.

Its hard to see on the 3 but its definitely there (the brake lights turn on on the display when the brakes are applied). To answer the OPs question, my opinion is that its a lot of #2. The regen brakes display the lights fairly aggressively, at least it seems so to me. I also wish it was easier to see when the car was displaying brake lights on the display. Driving behind other Model 3s it appears they "brake" a lot more than needed (by braking I mean display brake lights but still seem to be continuing on at roughly the same speeds).

Can there be more than one reason ?

#19: They do not like the smell coming from your car.

(ode to the SouthPark Prius episode)

Next software update changes how the car looks on the screen (it's bigger). Early access people have it.

Prius still has an ICE, which is the source of the "smug". Tesla doesn't, so it only has virtual audible (rather than olfactorial) emissions in the form of an Easter Egg. ;)

2019,16 will have the larger display, on freeways it will still look small.
the cool thing about this display is that if one of your lights is out it will display it off on that screen. if one of your headlights goes out, the car in the display will have a light out. if you turn a turning signal, it blinks on the screen. it is a cool gimmick

My problem is; I seem to have more cars hugging my m3 rear end. I wish they stayed further back.

I don't think this is the case in CA. Would be nice if it was. I rather not get rear ended.
