Why does Model 3 charge at 32 amps and not 40 like my S?

Its $520, at that price wouldn't it make more sense just to get a HPWC? Its 20 bucks cheaper and you still need an outlet wired regardless.
Some people already have a 14-50 outlet and this option remains semi-portable (can take to visit relatives for example).

Also, I have seen cases where electricians charge a lot more money to wire a EVSE vs just a 14-50.

There's no other legitimate reason for giving us a weaksauce 32 amp charging cord. Other EV manufacturers will use this as reasons to buy their cars instead of 3's. Tesla could at least give us a high-amp charger option like they used to do on the S with dual chargers, even though the $2000 cost for that was also ridiculous.

You guys are forgetting that the Model 3 battery is more efficient. Even with the 32 amp charging cable, it charges the 3 at 30 miles per hour vs 23 for the S and 20 for the X.

I was told that Tesla recommends against using the old mobile connector with the model 3. I purchased one to use for my model s because it allows me to close the cover on my outdoor 14-50 plug. I don’t care about the slower charging speed, because my car Isalways fully charged in the morning.

Imho it is more accurate to say the car is more efficient. It’s ultimately about weight. The car weighs less, and therefore requires less energy per mile. Some of that weight reduction is from the battery, but it’s from other areas too.

I'm confused. I thought Tesla hasn't made and "standard" battery M3s yet. Our M3 charges at 40amps. I also asked our delivery specialist if the charge cords were universal and he replied via email that all Tesla charge cords work with all Teslas.

It's quite simple. Tesla is cheap-assing anyone who buys a standard battery. In addition to less miles, they also cut you back with a reduced charge rate capability at anything other than a supercharger. That's right, your maxed-out HPWC will only charge a standard battery 3 at a dismal 32 amps. Because you didn't buy the $9000 big battery, which contains roughly $7000 in SHEER PROFIT for Tesla. So you must pay the penalty for not paying Tesla.

Why would you expect a car with a smaller battery to charge at the same power as a car with a larger battery?

PS the charging power is the same as the Bolt, which has a larger battery than the Model 3.

Uh the three can charge at a higher rate than the Bolt. The included EVSE Mobile Connector is limited to 32A though. With a WC or a 1st gen MC you can charge at 48A (on the LR 3).

No, the 1st generation UMC charges at a maximum of 40A (using 14-50 or 6-50 adapter). Anyway, the post being commented on was referring specifically to the short range 3 which will only have 32A charger.

You are right on the Gen 1MC,

I wonder if the SR 3 charger is software gimped, seems silly to actually make a charger that charges at a lower rate hardware wise, but then again they apparently stopped doing the software gimped 72A units for the S and X so what do I know.
