Why doesn't the younger generation "love" cars like the older?

Cars are expensive. I've probably spent $70000 over 15 years/300k miles of driving, which translates into almost half of what the median house costs in the US assuming I invested it. And I'm fairly thrifty, the US average over the same mileage would be something like $270000. With unemployment fairly high among younger people, it can literally be a choice between owning a car or a home.
