I drove a Tesla Model S from late 2017 up until a month ago. Waved to several other drivers, but I don't recall ever getting a wave back. Had I bought one in 2012, there might have been more return waves. But by 2017 they weren't unheard of, and once the 3 started selling in high volume, you're much more likely to see a Tesla than any other EV being sold in the USA, even the Leaf which started selling here before the S (but not the Roadster.)
The Roadsters are still very rare to see on the road and might have their own thing, specific to other Roadster drivers.
I've heard Bolt drivers toss buckets of water at each other, though I've never seen it to confirm.
