It may be the tinted rear window glass that is contributing to this. It can make it difficult to see behind the car on overcast days (and especially so at night).
The rear window is so small it's almost useless. Get friendly with your side mirrors. I've driven so much in vehicles with no rearview mirror that I just use the side mirrors instinctively now. Unless someone is right on your tail you should see them.
I felt the same way in the beginning - the problem is the window tint. But I'm used to looking at the screen now when I back up. much better, except when there are raindrops on the camera. lol
I agree the rear view mirror is very dark. I've seen mentions of "auto dimming mirrors" but have not seen a way to disable that to see if it improves visibility. Does anyone know if there is a setting I can change for the auto dimming mirrors?
Yeah, the auto-dimming center rear view mirror errs on the dark side. Been true on both my Model Y's.
As others have noted the rear window is small and tinted which doesn't help. Not sure why the auto-dimming errs towards overkill but I think it's mostly just how it's built.
I might be an outlier, I really like the auto-dimmed rear view mirrors at night. On my Chevy Bolt I much preferred the LCD camera mirror over any previous actual mirrors. But the MY rearview mirrors are my favs by far.
I found the rear mirror being a little dark myself but gotten used to just. Even thou, I can see the camera, I would still physically should check my surrounding as if there was no technology to help to ensure it is clear to move.
yeah, the auto-dimming mirror - I disabled it, and I see no difference. It's the rear window tint. Just open the trunk, and see from the mirror that it's quite bright. close the trunk and it's dark.
