Coming Monday I am sure that our beloved Model S will become European Car of the Year 2014. For me it already won the title so I had some windscreen stickers made and put them on my car to make a statement. Also have given it to some fellow forum members to follow my "believe". I cannot believe that the title will go to the BMW i3 or any other car because as we all know the Model S is the future...............and the future is here !!

Without having even been in any of the shortlist cars, my guess is:

    1 BMW i3
    2 Mazda 3
    3 Citroën C4 Picasso
    4 Tesla Model S
    5 Peugeot 308
    6 Skoda Octavia
    7 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Daily Telegraphs motoring editor posted Model S 4th on his voting list, with a V12 Merc in the no.1 position. Go figure ?

Just look at the top two comments though. Sums up the journalists twisted view quite nicely. Feel free to add more comments or 'like' the ones left ...

Seems like the Peugeot 308 made it.

    Result of the Jury:

    307 points - Peugeot 308
    223 points - BMW i3
    216 points - Tesla Model S
    182 points - Citroen C4 Picasso
    180 points - Mazda 3
    172 points - Skoda Octavia
    170 points - Mercedes Benz S-Class

This means that even the Mercedes Benz S-Class is not a better car than the Peugeot 308? I am puzzled here.

Guessing the i3 lost because it only seats 4 and because it’s considerably more expensive than the Peugeot. And the Model S also lost because it’s in turn a lot more expensive than the i3.

At least the fourth most efficient car won (the Renault Zoe didn’t even make it to the 7 finalists, which makes no sense at all).

That has historically been the whole point of this award. To give the price to a car people can afford to buy. The Toyota GT-86/Subaru BRZ coming in second last year, and the S-class qualifying as one of the seven finalists this year seems to have begun to up end that somewhat though…

Thanks for the support guys, looks like the ICE manufacturers are not aware that their days are over. Only it takes a few years before they understand. Should be marvelous that a USA brand wins the European award. When Tesla Gen 3 (model E?) is there Tesla should try again to win the award, sure Europe is more ready for it at that time.

    +1

Even though I can understand anyone who is disappointed that Model S didn't win, think about it for a moment.
This is a European car award which mainly favors affordable vehicles. That two of the three cars on the podium are EVs is one hell of a revolution imho. And that Model S manages to make it to third place, even though it is as unaffordable for many people as an S-Class Merc, makes it even more of an achievement.
Never forget, in many markets Model S still is a luxury car. I'm not talking about Norway or Netherlands of course, where it is only cheap because it is heavily subsidized.

With an emphasis on affordable cars, third place is an achievement. There are not many US designed and built cars on the list Discoducy linked to. The only ones that stand out are the Model S in 2014, and the Volt/Ampera in 2012.
