The $35K base price, even after the much lower operating costs, makes this the Camry. The Gen 4 ('22 or '23) with it's targeted $20K bottom end (or whoever nails that sort of design successfully and manufactures at scale, as you say) is the Corolla/Civic.
I've got the odds of at least 90% of [US] new light duty vehicle unit sales being plug-in EV by 2025 at around %35 (1 in 3), and the odds of it happening by 2029 at around 85% (only 1 in 6 that it doesn't by that point), and I expect hybrids to be a relatively small and shrinking share of that as the economics of battery price drops continue to squeeze on the cost of including any sort of ICE.
