Well..The inevitable happened..6 days after delivery, driving N880 near the Tesla plant, a rock flew into the panoramic windshield and created a nice divot and 1/8 crack. I called my insurance and we had safelite repair it....I've never had a windshield repaired, but it was unnerving seeing the technician get a diamond point scribe open a larger hole which could subsequently be pressure sealed with epoxy with this clever device they've constructed. Althought they said the success rate varied...it worked on my vehicle and although I can still see a small blemish (and probably only I can tell where it is), it is supposed to eliminate any crack propogation. This got me thinking though...what if the windshield required replacement? Are there spare parts? would they pull a windshield from the production line potentially reducing delivery output? I've posed these questions to my service center and am waiting for a reply....

Chips are part of life with cars. I've seem to have to have replacement windshields every year or two on my other cars. I assume that the Tesla will be the same. The repair might work or it might develop into a crack after a few months. I've had chips that were fine for a year then all of a sudden, develop into a crack. Fortunately, insurance covers replacement. Yes, you can get replacement windshields... and all other glass. I had someone break into my Tesla from the right rear window. Rocklin SC had the replacement part and fixed it the next day... they seem to have a good stock of parts.

Ugh. I have a 16 year old Acura that got a rock chip in the first week I owned it. Never got another chip for the life of the car.

I mentioned this in another thread, but many states require no-deductible windshield replacement, and some insurance companies offer a no-deductible windshield rider. The times I've asked my insurance company, I've been met with resistance at first, and then usually they look it up and say it's no extra charge. Worth asking about for future incidents. I need to do this as well; it's been a while and I've moved states.

The windshields, like mspohr stated, most likely aren't manufactured in the Tesla plant in CA. They are a supply chain component which means supply shouldn't be an issue. I've tinted the front windshield to help keep heat out of the car in the summer. Arizona is HOT. So if I ever have to replace it, it's going to be another chunk of change to retint that new glass.

By the way, if you haven't thought of tinting the front and live in a warm climate, definitely do. The rake of the windshield means that the dash gets especially abused by the summer sun. The tint will help a lot here.

Not anymore, try $600 now, there has been significant part price reductions for the Model S. Had one replaced last year on my car, then had a new chip 1 month later. Second one didn't crack so it was just repaired like this thread.

My wife and kids were at the Fremont Model X Viewing event on Friday. One of the specialists responded to a customer question about replacement cost on the windshield. He said it's $3,800. Ouch.

Get those riders, repairs, and .... idk?? Somehow rider+repair doesn't quite seem like enough for that $1750. Hmmmm. Thinking ... I guess the rider is basically a time quotient: titrate the flow. I'd like to see a miles per replacement for freeway driving in California, etc.., so I can know what to expect for this, and what the insurance cost on this is normalizing this to. Also, what part of the parking lot to park in to avoid the negative jealous stuff. I'd hate to have 2 free weeks work per month because of jealous coworkers that use reduction rather than achievement.

Also, make sure insurance is good nanosecond 0 because of the initial hit potential ($3,800). Hidden dashcams? Yes, lots of hidden dashcams. Perhaps Tesla can record the autopilot camera feed for us for this purpose, and when it hears a window break event can automatically upload the picture to Tesla Mothership and call us on the phone with law enforcement coordination. THAT would be a feature, a practically necessary one. Why doesn't Tesla already do this?

Latest update--New windshield (parts and labor) costs $1500. Going to see what Safelite can do first and then reassess. A very special @#$% you to Virginia and Maryland for milling highways and leaving large rocks behind. It's not the way you did business 20 years ago. Haven't had the car for two months yet.

Small rock chip in our 2018 Model X. My wife actually got the truck's license number though I doubt it will help. Had a Safelite repair done on 3.17.2020- 10 days ago. The repair expanded the 3/16" chip to a 1" repair site because of "THE PROCEDURE". Today, while driving to the airport I noticed the 1" was now 3" extending toward the passenger's side. Came home and later went to store. Came out to see the crack is now 2 FEET long extending into the Driver's view. Safelite won't even credit back our repair fee, saying they will "credit" us on a replacement. Do we trust these people with all the intricacies involved? Rearview mirror, cameras, etc? Or is this a dealer only replacement?

That happens.
Sometimes a repair works, sometimes not. I had a new windshield put in by Safelite (Tesla doesn't do windshields) and all was good for a month then I got a chip in it. Took it to a local glass shop and they did the repair. Has been good so far (8 months).
Safelite did a good job on the windshield replacement, camera, etc.

I've had two other repairs done be Safelite. Both cars still look the same 9 years later. This one however.........Safelite told me over the phone that they don't do Tesla X windshield replacements. Have ours scheduled April 14 at Sarasota Service Center.
