Winter is Coming - when do you install your winter tires?

I swap out my own wheel sets so it costs me about 30mins of time. I’ve chewed up a set of Blizzaks with blocks of tread missing on highway speeds going into spring thinking it wasn’t a big deal...now I swap out my Nokans when I know it warms up and conditions get dry. I guess 120-130 km/h highway speeds don’t help either.

Also, it’s not a choice to run all seasons all year long in Quebec or if you travel the Sea to Sky or BC highways north and east of Hope BC. Snow rated or M+S tires are required by law between Oct and April in these areas.
Just to be clear the poster mentioned all weather tires

Is there a difference between all weather and all season? I was at Costco getting tires and the guy helping me had never heard of all weather tires. I'm not seeing anything at Tire Rack called all-weather. Is it a Canadian thing?
yes, there is a big difference. Unlike all-season tires, all-Weather tires are true winter-rated tires that you can also use year-round ie in the summer, designed with a rubber compound that performs in a wider range of temperatures than dedicated snow tires. They will outperform all-season tires in the winter, although true winter tires will still be better than those - but the all-weathers offer year round convenience if you don't want to switch summer/winter tires.

However there are only a few manufacturers of all-weather tires, including Nokian (e.g. the WRG3) and Hankook (e.g. Optimo 4S, but AFAIK this tire isn't available in sizes to fit the Model S). Here locally at least Nokians are only carried by one retailer (KalTire) so I'm not surprised Costco doesn't know about them. We have WRG3s on our ICE car and like them.

I got Nokian WRG3s for my Model X this season which have been great except for the availability. I blew out a sidewall in one of the rear ones during the holiday and Discount Tire had only 4 of these tires left in the US. No other store could source them at all. I was impressed Discount Tire would ship me a single tire clear across the country and install it for free since I bought the set of 4 from them. When their stock finishes, I doubt it'll be replenished until the next season though. I'm considering buying another spare just in case...

I use the Nokian Hakka R2 winters now, but would seriously consider the WRG3's going forward based on all the good stuff I'm hearing. The web site claims they have a low rolling resistance... have you found that to be true? (i.e. no increase in consumption with these tires over the stock tires).

To be honest @mknox I had my stock tires on too short a time to make the comparison myself, but Consumer Reports tests rates the WRG3's rolling resistance as "excellent". I remember reading CR did test using a dynamometer outside of the lab to get these ratings and found the efficiency gain from upgrading from tires with "poor" to "excellent" rolling resistance was about 6%.

Thanks. The Hakka R2's also have excellent rolling resistance. I cannot perceive any efficiency difference when I go from summer to winter or winter to summer. Given that the WRG3's are meant for year-round use, it wouldn't be great if they cut your range year-round... but it sounds like that's not the case.

You might want to try instead with Vianor if you must source from the US. They are the North American distributor for Nokian (Also a division of Nokian). They also have retail outlets all around new England. AFAIK, they are also responsible for supplying the Canadian market. If these guys don't carry it, you won't find it elsewhere.

I didn’t notice any perceptible change in rolling resistance when I switched from the 3 season stock tires to the WRG3. I think they are *slightly* louder though if I recall.

The service specialist at Vancouver SC cautioned me against WRG3 for Model X. Apparently Model X is heavy for the WRG3 and the side walls can blow up.
He advised Hakka R2. I have no knowledge about this stuff. I was thinking of WRG3.
FYI the WRG3 also come in a "WRG3-SUV" variant. I don't know the detailed specific spec differences though from what I've seen the tread pattern is different than the standard WRG3 (we have the -SUV version on our CR-V). You might want check if available in a size/spec suitable for the X
