I'm starting to think about the coming winter season, and wondered if I need special rims due to the vehicle weight or whether any old set of steel rims will do the job?

Any will do, just make sure they clear the calipers, etc.

I plan to use the stock 18s without the covers for snow tires.

Make sure your snow tires are XL rated and the right load rating. The car is heavy.
