It's like Tesla fans have never seen a truck. This is getting to be like apple fans.

The f150 starts at $28,495. The raptor is $53,205. This means you get it for less because you don't pay MSRP on fords. .

According to Kelley Blue Book's latest figures, the average transaction price of a 2018 Ford F-150 is $47,174 (this doesn't include taxes, etc)

So 39k for the Tesla is in fact about 8 less than the average F-150 sells for across all trims.

Also there are pickup trucks cheaper than cars and SUVs made by the same companies everywhere. They don't compete with each other in class at all. A person shopping for a car doesn't look at a truck. The raptor is faster than a lot of cars and SUVs. Doesn't mean the slower car price goes down.

I understand the point, but almost NO car (or truck) sells as many "base models" as tesla does. Tesla does not offer very many options (even less on the truck). A tesla has a paint option, a couple interior options, and whether you purchase FSD or not.

Your typical car (or truck) has either several option packages, or several trims (which amount to close to the same thing).

Just like you can typically get discount on MSRP on most cars and trucks, hardly anyone is buying the base model of these.

As I said earlier though, I agree with your other premise. When people want a truck as a vehicle, they are looking for a truck, not a "truck or a car", at least if they can afford to buy a new vehicle which is what we are talking about here. The thing I cant get though, is who is the tesla "truck" for, exactly? Who is the market? Thats not a discussion for this thread, obviously, but its relevant for "what is going to happen when this vehicle is released?"

My personal feeling is, sales of this truck will be a very niche product, for wealthy people mostly in California as a status symbol. Anyone who really wants a truck likely wont buy a vehicle that has such "distinctive" and I would say "outwardly combative / statement" styling. So, I think the impact will be very minimal from this truck. The Rivian, for example, right now, looks like a "truck". The model S sold because it is a very good looking car. Its distinctive, but also very attractive to most.

The model 3 sells because it looks "like a nice car" and not a cheap econobox like most other MFRs compliance type EVs or other hybrids. Looks matter... a LOT. A car is usually one of the most expensive things a person buys for themselves, after providing for housing / a place to live. Cars (using that term to mean "personal vehicles") many times are a part of someones identity, because they not only take you to work, but also take you to the things you want or need to do. Trips to the market, to work, to the amusement park, to transport your kids, and to get you to and from your hobbies.

Most people wont buy a car they dont at least like the looks of, and many people dont like to make " a statement" with their vehicle. The model 3 is selling so well because its a good CAR.... that happens to be electric. We are past the "EV statement" for most model 3 buyers.

If this is the "tesla statement" for a truck, and then they later make a "regular" one that might work, but I dont think the cybertruck will have much impact at all or move the needle in the slightest in the truck market.

There are others though, the Rivian, and I believe ford is making one. Every major car manufacter will have some sort of EV crossover / SUV as well.

I expect almost no impact at all from this vehicle, mostly because hardly anyone will actually want to be seen in it except people trying to make a statement or "be different"... but most people dont want that with their vehicles. Its my opinion that "truck buyers" want that even less than others.

My hope is that as the prices of the batteries go down they put more of the money into luxury features. Quieting the cabin should be #1 on the list. Then things like auto lift frunk and trunk, heated steering wheel, heads up display, cargo net hooks in the trunk, etc....

You are comparing a 2wd Tesla truck to a 4wd f150 now at that price. You are being bias. The Cyber truck is 49 in 4wd.

The invoice on an f150 supercrew xl with 4wd is $38 and you will not pay $38 if you negotiate. The dealer can negotiate the price to $36 easy and then you can likely add on Ford incentives.

Even KBB says this below

"KBB’s pricing structure tends to favors dealers, meaning listed retail prices can be higher than with other guides. Start with the listed retail price and bargain down."

The Tesla pickup is cheaper than rivian yes but than f150 no. Better buy than f150 as a mainstream pickup...no.

Nobody should be saying I need to trade my f150 in for this or this makes more sense than f150.

I agree with this guy in everything.

It does.

It also will cost tens of thousands of dollars more for comparable specs to the Tesla truck.

Some folks might be ok with "looks weird outside" for saving $20,000+.
The diff between the base Tesla Truck and the base R1T is $30K and FOUR motors:

Not a chance!

This is a lifestyle vehicle, not a work-horse.
No-one really needs it, but some may want it to express themselves, their sense of style, and values.

You would buy one, or the other, to impress your friends when you get out of it at the mall, during kids pickup from school, or when pulling up to a friend's house.

Do you want to be the guy (or girl) in the photo #1, or #2 below?

I wouldn't because I don't really give a crap what other people think of my car if I like it- and would never voluntarily drive any car to a mall if I had a choice about it.

I would buy it, if I were buying an EV pickup, because it's $20,000 cheaper than the Rivian one, with better specs.

I drive from inside the car, not outside, so if it's goofy in exterior profile but awesome in interior comfort and function, why waste enough cash for a nice vacation or two on it looking more "like a real truck"? That seems an incredibly shallow and foolish waste of funds.

(now- no argument many folks are foolish, shallow, and waste funds- so Rivian will probably be ok... but so will Tesla as plenty of folks aren't and the truck pie is more than huge enough to go around given how few either company will actually have enough batteries to build compared to the overall market)

BTW, Tesla is reporting nearly 150,000 pre-orders from the first day. Apparently a decent # of folks agree with me.

Ok...and?

The 4 motors don't get you anything useful for most buyers for your $30,000.

On top of that on the Rivian-

The range is inferior, the bed is 4.5 feet instead of 6.5 feet, total cargo space is smaller, payload is MUCH smaller (about half the Tesla), ground clearance is less, etc... for $30,000 more money. That's pretty crap no matter how many motors they slap on it.

Just correcting ya bro... 30K+ not 20K+ diff and 1 motor vs 4...chillax bruh...

The preorder is $100 and refundable. Even I ordered one and I don't even want it. In three years when the trimotor comes out I will prob cancel but who knows.

The $100 preorders mean nothing. If this was Ford's announced pickup you would all be ripping it apart.
well, they mean something. Tesla now has around $15ml in interest free loans... model y has a bigger effect on model 3 than the triangle of doom and musk knows it.

I have a 2019 F250 diesel with a MSRP of $79k that I paid $67k for. For $69k, I will definitely be replacing the F250 for the Tri-motor version of the Cybertruck. The cost of ownership will be so much cheaper. No more $80 diesel fill-ups, $100 oil changes, $150 fuel filter changes, DEF, and an extremely expensive motor to fix out of warranty, etc..........

The Rivian looks like an ultra-expensive electric Toyota Tacoma replacement. The small bed is a total joke and worthless for really hauling anything. On a positive note, from the photo I didn't know that it had a built-in dog kennel. :D

The Tesla design, love it or hate it, instantly make everything else look very dated. The versatility and potential of the 6.5' bed is amazing.

I will say yes this is a replacement for an F250. You are the customer this truck belongs to. This whole apple effect where every Tesla owner is going to buy a full size pickup now is just funny. A model 3 in no way competes with an F250.

Think about going to a car dealership and saying yes I'm looking for either a Ford escort or an F250.

The people with a model 3 could have always had a pickup. Tesla did not just invent a new type of vehicle. Why buy a model 3 if you wanted/needed a pickup? It's the apple effect. It's sad.
