I assume the car was gutted. No fluids, no batteries, no real tires, probably a lot of other stuff removed. Not a chance in hell they are sending batteries that will likely explode in space.

The official paperwork does list the car as "modified", so I presume such steps were taken. It would be a shame if an otherwise-perfect launch would get messed up by an unruly payload.

Agreed. The tires or battery exploding may cause sufficient thrust to move the payload of target - not what they would want (and cheaper too to gut it)
Also in the view from inside the Roadster, you can see the VDS is missing from below the climate control knobs. And the rear view mirror is missing, not that Starman would really need it.
