Norway now has a solid lead over Canada, with Netherlands in a strong 4th position. We mustn't forget, though, that the Iceland pin is a fleet order of 100 vehicles, which puts Iceland firmly in second, after the US.

Iceland is tiny, as are some other countries with orders. What countries have the highest reservations per person? Here's the answer (for countries with at least 1 pin per million population):

FWIW, 77% of the pins are in blue states.

That, my dear Boston, is a shocking statistic.

Given that every state internally is a mixture of blue/red/other vs 100% the same, and given that a large number of reservations are in metropolises (that happened to be in blue states), not really a surprising statistic.

However, I don't think one can simply translate that state level color down to individual reservation holders.

Maybe we can get Nate Silver on loan to do some statistical massaging for TMC, now that the election is over?

That, my dear Boston, is a shocking statistic.

Well it might not actually be that shocking. The population of the blue states is 64% of the US population. And to add on top, most of the wealth in the country is in California, and NewEngland/MidAtlantic where everything is blue probably puts close to 77% of the US wealth in blue states. Texas being the only real Red state with large population and wealth (maybe NC, Atlanta, and Phoenix being the other places in Red states where you have both population and wealth).

Maybe it has something to do with general attributes and tax breaks avaliable in more liberal states. We have no tax breaks at all in Texas.

Probably not. We have a $5,000 tax credit in Georgia and we are a pretty red state.

And Florida as a Blue state, even though it is not yet official.

What caught my eye was that Tesla has no physical presence in two of the top ten states: Maryland and Georgia. The fact that it can have robust sales without a store, gallery, or service center in the state says quite a lot about the strength of Tesla's brand and product.

Another aside: the six states without marked reservations are Arkansas, Mississippi, Montana, North and South Dakota, and Wyoming.

Yeah but the DC store basically covers 1/2 of Maryland, and Baltimore is only an hour or so away.

Georgia on the other hand is a 90 minute plane flight to the nearest store.

Although they do have a service center planned, and they were advertising for a mall store position a few months ago.

And your excellent zeemap only has ~1200 entries, which means it only has a 10% sampling of reservations. I wonder how that compares to TMC readership as a percentage of reservations? Perhaps we should be encouraging people to plot themselves if they haven't already...the information is extremely useful for Supercharger location conjecture, finding nearby enthusiasts, etc.

You can locate yourself if you haven't done so already using this link:

Tesla Model S & X Reservations

Or maybe bump the map post over on the TM forum?

Nigel, I definitely agree, but this sample is probably heavily skewed toward earlier reservations, say the first 50% or so. I would be very interested to see where the most recent 5-6K reservations lie geographically. Spread around the US in a similar fashion? Clustering around existing owners/TM Galleries?

Of course, Tesla has all this information at their fingertips.

For consumer research purposes that would be considered a huge sample.

It's not necessarily a good sample, even though it's large, because it isn't a random sample. That doesn't mean the DS is right about NY being second behind California (maybe he meant metropolitan area after SF area?), but it is possible that Floridians and Texans, for whatever reason, would skew towards participation on TMC whilst NYers don't participate on TMC and therefore get underrepresented on our maps and such.
