Exactly what happened to us. In Sep 2020, we traded in model S for X. Since then we've had a 900+ mile trip, a 300 mile trip and taken fam of 5 (w/ dog) and 4 bikes around quite a bit. Absolutely great decision for any fam that likes the outdoors/taking road trips. Would also recommend a hitch mount luggage rack (aluminum). Works great to free up space in the X.
